Wedding weekend sales and surprises

Functionlab Beauty Nutrition
Functionalab
Hello Couples,

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on the weekend. Why? Frankly, it’s because I’ve not really found anything that I am really passionate about. TODAY, I have a few people, places, items and events I think are worth a visit this weekend.

Functionlab Beauty Nutrition:
This is my new product obsession. I know that the weather is trying to get warmer, but most importantly, you may be trying to get into your wedding dress. I hope, you are doing it safely. That means exercise and good nutrition. If you are on some crash diet – STOP, and go to Functionalab’s outpost at Henri Bendel’s. You can’t miss them; they are in the front window. Our friends from Canada have created several products that contain the right balance of vitamins and minerals that can change your body from the inside out. We are talking about beautiful hair, nails, skin overall health and yes…even help you with your diet. Of course they maintain that you should also follow a well balanced diet, and exercise. So go and fill out their quick survey and speak with a nutritionist while you’re there.
The bonus – if you purchase more than $50 (between now and June 11), you will get a ‘free nutrient tonic (think Red Bull only healthy). I’m actually in the process of interviewing their Director of Nutrition and Training and will have that interview shortly, but don’t you wait. Your body, your health, and a better you are all waiting. Henri Bendel - 720 Fifth Avenue

Wedding dress by Amsale - bridal creations like no other

Do you know Amsale Aberra? If you’ve ever walked down Madison Avenue and you look up to the 2nd floor of 58th Street, you will see some of the most beautiful gowns adorning their window. Amsale is a gifted designer who is already renowned for her AMSALE and CHRISTOS collections; now Amsale now takes on the role of Creative Director for KENNETH POOL. This is a woman who’s passion for celebrating brides and the magical experience that is a celebration shows in each and every gown she touches.

What are the 'hot' types of gowns are girls asking for (either type of material (cotton, silk) style, shape etc.)?
Right now destination weddings are all the rage. A lot of girls are looking for dresses that are easy and comfortable to wear and not fussy. My answer is a very soft and romantic dress, made of English Net, Silk Chiffon, or our newest addition, Silk Jersey.

What are busiest times of the year that you see the spike in bridal gowns or is it year round?
Most brides dream of spring weddings. With our 6-8 month lead-time, this means our salon is full of brides near the end of the year. There is a steady flow of brides all year and we welcome your brides to come and see what we have to offer.

What other ways can a bride be more 'environmentally friendly?
We have many brides who are environmentally friendly. Because our dresses are made in New York City of silk, a natural and naturally green fabric, an Amsale gown is a great place to start!

How long does it take to create a dress and what are your price ranges?
We require 6-8 months to make and fit our wedding gowns. It's a surprising lead time, but necessary for the absolutely couture piece that each dress is. Our fabrics come from Italy, our beading from Paris. Our dresses are made in New York and hand beaded in our design studio. Upon completion, each dress is tailored to fit the bride, resulting in a dress that fits like it was custom made! While my creations start at $3,400, I also work one on one with Brides to create custom gowns starting at $20,000.

Anything else you want the readers to know about your designs?
Your wedding gown should be a reflection of your personality. It should be something you feel completely yourself in, completely comfortable, and something that in twenty years you'll look back on and love just as much as you did the day you wore it.

There are a lot of dresses out there – a lot to see, and pick from. When you go to a salon the moment you walk in is an accurate reflection of how you are treated. The moment you walk into the Amsale showroom, you know that you will be pampered, cared for and no matter what, your time is valued and you have your consultants full attention. I strongly recommend Amsale and with three collections, there is something for everyone at every price point.

For more info: The Amsale Flagship Salon is located at 625 Madison Avenue on the second floor. I would highly recommend you call (212) 583-1700 to schedule an appointment, but if you're in the neighborhood stop by and take a look.

Destination wedding: Atlantic City - Borgata/The Water Club offers luxury

Atlantic City is the east coast version of Las Vegas without traveling across country. When searching for another destination wedding location, Borgata and The Water Club in Atlantic City, NJ stand out among them. The first impression of Borgata's elegant style is marked by the private hotel lobby displaying marble archways, dark wood furnishings and door panels, buttery yellow wall accents, and a dramatic 3-dimensional Chihuly art glass chandelier. Chihuly glass is also spread throughout the public spaces of the hotel, evoking a modern, yet majestic feel.

Can you tell me about the hotel?

Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa features 2,000 guest rooms and suites; 161,000 square feet of gaming; 11 retail boutiques; 6 acclaimed fine dining restaurants by renowned chefs; a 54,000 square foot spa; and 4 signature nightlife experiences.

The resort also features Atlantic City’s first non-gaming, cosmopolitan hotel experience, The Water Club at Borgata.

Why a bride would want to have her wedding here?

A bride can get everything she needs for the big day in one place. Immersion Spa offers luxurious 80-minute treatments and an infinity-edge pool and fitness center (personal trainer available) to help get in shape before the ceremony. A salon is open for in-room hair styling and makeup applications.

The Water Club offer an impressive collection of upscale retail stores including La Perla’s luxury intimates and Hearts on Fire diamonds - the company’s first North American store.

Borgata offers celebrity-chef restaurants, entertainment, gaming, and nightlife options unmatched in Atlantic City. There is something to do at all hours, and something for everyone, making it a true destination wedding venue.

Each special event at The Water Club becomes a one-of-a-kind dining experience, as guests are invited to custom-build a menu from any of renowned Chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s fresh and imaginative creations, including a candy bar, featuring Zakarian’s homemade candies.

What about seasons, what are your busiest times of year that you're seeing brides?

We see brides all year but the busiest months for weddings are: May, June, September & October.

What are the best/signature experiences can a wedding party expect - or most importantly, if a couple is looking for a venue, why would they choose Borgata/The Water Club vs. another hotel/venue?

The Water Club at Borgata has taken Atlantic City to a new level by providing everything a contemporary traveler is looking for: high design, gourmet food and beverage by Geoffrey Zakarian, advanced technology and unmatched service. This is the ideal venue for intimate (120 guests or less), sophisticated, stylish and small wedding receptions, or engagement parties.

The versatility of the Aqua, Luna, Tides, and Waves rooms allow them to be set-up a variety of ways to best accommodate special event guests. There is over 4,000 sq ft of pre-function space, including a living room lounge for guests to enjoy hors d’oeuvres or socialize.

The lush and serene atmosphere of The Water Club’s five unique pool areas provide a unique alternative to a banquet room and will have your guests thinking they’re somewhere in the islands. Indoors or out, the exotic décor and ambiance of the poolside makes for an unforgettable affair. If you are looking for a venue that will meet all of your wedding needs, take the time to look at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa.

Celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan and Herbal Essences to the rescue

Herbal Essences Tousle Gel
Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly

Yesterday I heard you all singing “The sun will come out tomorrow...” Well, it’s looking like it may but, by the end of the week it could be sweltering. The weather is just not cooperating with those of us who are vain, about our hair. Knowing that we are truly in the height of wedding-hair season, I went back to celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan to ask if he had any additional advice.

He suggested that there are more ways to have beautiful wedding hair than an updo or something fussy. When the weather is as unstable as it is now or if you are planning a destination wedding, you should go for a look that is touchable and soft. There is something to be said about tousled tresses just begging to be touched. So why not go for it?

How?

1 – Prep your hair by washing it in Tousle Me Softly Shampoo and Conditioner by Herbal Essences.

2 – Deepening on your particular hair type, apply either mousse or spray gel on damp hair. If you have fine hair use the mousse and if you have frizzy hair or just want a bit more conditioning (you know tame those ends).

3 – Once you apply the product use a wide-tooth comb and don’t forget to lean your head to create volume in the middle and bottom sections of your hair. If you want a bit more curl, you can use a flat iron around 2” sections of your hair like a curling iron and hold for 5 seconds and release.

4 – This is the best part – Tousle, tousle, finger and fluff away. Don’t worry if every curl isn’t in perfect place it’s not supposed to be. You can finish off the look with hairspray to provide a light, flexible hold.

He assures me that your hair will be wonderfully touchable, and yes, picture perfect. So why not give this a try? For more information on getting and maintaining touchable hair, visit www.herbalessences.com

Grooms: Humeurs, by J.M.Weston are the Manolos for men

So I’m sure you guys know or at least have heard of Cinderella right? I won’t bore you with the entire story, but want to point out the 'thing' that started the craze for women. No, not the ring, or the prince, not even the big house. It’s shoes guys; it’s always about the shoes!! Of course you knew that, because you’ve watched your future wife drool every time she passes a shoe store.

Well, if you are that Prince Charming, why should your Cinderella be the only one in dapper shoes on your wedding day – or any day for that matter? I was extremely fortunate to attend one of the most unique shoe presentations I’ve ever seen. The “Humeurs” collection is the Manolo for men – yes they are über-sexy.

What makes them so special? They are what dreams are made of. Actually they are the individual dream of five designers: Frank Gehry, Martin Szekely, Kris Van Assche, Clémence Krzentowski and Michael Perry. These five designers entrusted their individual ‘dream shoe’ vision to the artisans of J.M. Weston, and then watched their dream become a reality. The final products are five shoes that are so amazingly different in style, pattern, color and shape; they made me want a pair in my size.

So can you, my grooms have your own dream come true? The answer is absolutely. These shoes are made by request and tailored to your personal specifications. There are infinite combinations and other details that you can request that can reflect your personality. Personally the golf-like oxford shoe were amazing, but the black ones with bling – breathtaking!

I won’t lie, the price tag is, well Manolo-like but how many other times will you have a shoe custom made how you like? Think of it as an investment that will have your friends asking you “where did you get those shoes?”

While you may not always be able to judge a book by it’s cover, your shoes – on your wedding day and beyond will tell people that you are a man of discriminating taste and impeccable style.

"Humeurs" collection, can be purchased by special order at the J.M. Weston boutique - 812 Madison Avenue 212.535.2100
Retail ranges from $2,300 - $3,500.

Celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan and Herbal Essences Hydraclicious - a great combination

Herbal Essenses
Herbal Essences Hydralicious collection

Is anyone else besides me tired of this rainy weather?? My hair is looking like a giant puffball and even with all the ‘moisture’ in the air; my hair is dry, dry, dry. A while ago, I met celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan and he told me about the then new line of Herbal Essences Hydralicious collection products. This collection (three shampoos and conditioners) contains swirls that are actually two different formulas, and when the swirls combine with water, moisturizers are released to repair hair and help protect it from future damage.

Well yesterday, I tried the Hydralicious, which is the Reconditioning Hydrator formula; perfect for my hair type which is super curly and yes I’ll admit, with highlights which I’m sure make my hair even drier. All I can say is - WOW. So much so, that the woman sitting next to me under the dryer asked what I was using because she said “your hair smells wonderful!!” The real test – the skies became overcast and while the humidity started to rise, my hair stayed perfect. The curls stayed in place; there was bounce and shine in my hair that hadn’t been there in a long time.

I asked Charles, who really wants every woman to have Luscious Hair, to provide you my brides with the key to achieving your best hair condition on your wedding day and beyond.

"Hydration is key as we head into warmer weather. The combination of being out in the sun, flat ironing, blow-drying, and/or curling, robs hair of moisture, therefore causing hair to react more to the dryness and humidity in the air. Healthy, well-hydrated hair responds better to heat styling and allows styling agents to do their job more effectively. This is especially key if you are having a destination wedding.”

Here are a few more keys to Bridal-ready hair:

  • Make sure now that you are using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. In this case like your friendship with your partner, you are building a healthy base, for healthy-hair by using Herbal Essences Hydralicious to help achieve the look you want. So if you have fine hair – use the “Featherweight Hydrator”; for damaged try “Self Targeting Hydrator” and if you have damaged or dry hair/frizzy hair the “Reconditioning Hydrator” is the product for you.
  • Schedule trial appointments for your bridal hair. Be sure to bring your veil or other accessories. These appointments assure that you, your hairdresser and makeup artist share the same vision of your wedding-day look and help guarantee you'll have no surprises on the big day.
  • Be sure that the hairdresser you choose for the trial appointment will be available on the day of your wedding. Hairdressers take vacations, too! Again, you don’t want surprises.
  • Don’t think about radical changes in hairstyle or color before your wedding day. This is probably just not the best idea. It is better to fine-tune your look now and wait until after the wedding to make more dramatic changes. I do think this is the perfect time to make your hair color a little bit brighter and richer with a few extra highlights or by adding a bit more zip to your overall color.
  • Your last touch-up should occur two weeks to 10 days before your wedding day. No hair color changes should occur on the last touch-up.

Charles is the stylist to many well-known celebrities like, Leighton Meester, Becki Newton, Whitney Port and if they trust him for their red-carpet hair, you can trust his advice for your red-carpet wedding day. I’m a believer in his advice and in Herbal Essences. What are you waiting for – start your hair care today.

Grooms, grooming check-list with help from John Allan's

Haircut – check, shoes shined – check, nails trimmed – check, scotch to relax your nerves – double check. With so much on your mind you don’t need to run all around the city when there is a place (or actually several locations) where you can have all this done at the same time. Where is this magic place in OZ that combines speed, luxury and liquid libations… John Allan’s.

In a city where salons for women are on just about every corner like Starbucks, it was a pleasure to step into this oasis for men in midtown. It’s not an inexpensive oasis, but I think the benefits will outweigh the initial pinch of your pocket. The day I visited the salon it was busy – just about every chair was taken with men getting shampooed or relaxing at the bar watching CNN. Carlotta Malloy, Special Events Coordinator of John Allan’s showed me the lay of the land.

I tell you, I’ve walked past here and the dark windows I often wondered what was going on in here. This is not your girlfriends shop – it’s so masculine and yet not over the top. Instead of stark white walls, there are wood floors, leather couches and a pool table. There are also private areas for massages, hair coloring and pedicures.

Bonus: If you live in NYC, buy an annual membership - one of the best deals around. Unlimited haircuts, manicures, shoe shines (oh my!) for the low price - $720.

Double Bonus: John Allan’s partners with premium spirits brands that offer special pours and tastings so while getting groomed you can enjoy a new scotch or unique vintage. If you buy the annual membership - you can keep bottles of your preferred drink at the location.

If a man has an important event coming up such as a wedding, how far in advance should he begin grooming?

John Allan: The groom should expect to get a haircut about two weeks before his wedding date to let the style settle in. Then if he needs a clean up around the edges he can come in the day before. We don't recommend a facial the week of, we recommend getting a couple facials to get his skin accustomed to it. A pedicure should be scheduled the week of and the manicure can be scheduled with the clean up.

What makes a manicure for men different than a manicure for women?

Manicures at John Allan’s are meant to help a guy maintain his professional appearance. Whether it’s the first handshake or sitting at the conference table, clean hands and nails are essential to looking good. We designed the manicure to be a part of The Full Service rather than a separate treatment so the John Allan’s client or member understands its importance and leaves our club looking and feeling his best from head to toe.

Do men get actually get manicures/pedicures?

Absolutely. There are members that have weekly standing appointments to have their nails trimmed. As for pedicures, they need to think of it as a special treat to have a foot massage. Since they are usually much harder on their feet then women, they should take care of them as well. If a groom is heading to a beach location for his wedding and/or honeymoon, we recommend that they have a pedicure before they go. It just makes them look more polished. It’s just a warm soak is followed by a good scrub, trim and a deep moisturizing foot massage. We get a lot of positive feedback from the guys.

I haven’t yet found another place in the city where this unique approach to preparing, entertaining and relaxing the groom and groomsmen for the big day exists. Have you?

So don’t leave all the prepping to the bride. Go to the Club, relax, maybe shoot a game of pool before your wedding. This is a great opportunity for you to experience your own unique wedding treatment…and if you become a member, you can continue the treatment whenever you wish.

Wedding words, symbols and traditions

Music is usually used, to mark the beginning and end of a wedding ceremony. You may wish to add an opening and closing ritual as well. These rituals provide another way to include special people in the ceremony as honored assistants.

Water Ceremony
In some Native American communities, drinking from a goblet of water sanctifies the union. Water is a basic element, without which there would be no life. A two spouted water jug designed for this purpose may be used. The Wedding Jar is then displayed in the home as a reminder of one's vows.

Water may also be used in a ceremonial washing of hands to purify them, before uniting one's hands in marriage with another person. It's another way of saying "I wash away my past and begin 'clean' with you."

The Wedding Contract
In Biblical times, and in contemporary Judaism, as well, a wedding contract or "ketubah", is signed during the ceremony. Essentially, the contract is a written copy of the wedding vows. In Biblical times, it included the dowry and other family agreements, but contemporary ones are more spiritual/emotional and less practical. There are many on-line sources that offer both traditional and contemporary ketubahs, or you can make your own. Each partner signs the contract during the ceremony, and it is displayed in their home during their marriage.

The Tea Ceremony
Originating in the Orient, the tea ceremony represents a partner (traditionally the bride) honoring her new in-laws. The bride pours tea for the in-laws with a promise to honor them as she does her own family of origin. By serving them tea, she serves and honors their family.

Jumping The Broom
"Jumping the broom" is a charming African-American tradition reminiscent of the historical manner in which couples were united under slavery, when wedding ceremonies were not allowed. Partners jump over a broom to signify their new status as a married couple within their community of friends and family. The broom can be decorated for the wedding day, if you wish.

Breaking The Glass(es)
Another ancient Jewish custom that can be incorporated beautifully into interfaith weddings is the "Breaking of the Glass". At the end of a Jewish wedding, after the pronouncement of the new status as a married couple, the groom traditionally stomps on a wine glass wrapped in a cloth napkin or towel. It is said "Just as it would be impossible to return the glass to its original condition, the lives of the wedding couple are forever changed." The popping noise marks the end of the ceremony and the beginning of the new life together. Immediately afterward, the guests break out into a joyous chorus of "Mazel Tov" (Congratulations).

Circling
In traditional Jewish, Greek Orthodox, and Hindu traditions, there are customs where the bride circles her groom, or both partners circle each other. In the Hindu tradition, both partners circle the sacred fire.

Sand Ceremony
The Sand Ceremony represents the joining of two lives into a new dimension of unity. It is similar to the Unity Candle ceremony. Instead of each partner having their own candle, each partner has a vial of sand which represents their childhood and life before marriage. During the ceremony, each partner pours his or her sand into a larger vial to represent their new status as a married couple. Some couples use two different colors of sand, which make a third color when joined.

Unity Candle
Although this ceremony is not historically Christian, it has become very popular in contemporary Christian and Interfaith weddings. Three candles are placed on the altar. The two side candles are each lit (sometimes by the parents of each partner) representing the individual lives of each partner. The center candle is lit by both partners during the ceremony, signifying their new life together as "One"

The Veiling and Unveiling of the Bride
Traditional American Christian weddings include the unveiling of the bride after the father of the bride escorts her down the aisle and she is "given away" to her groom. The unveiling is reminiscent of the Biblical story of Jacob, Rachel and Leah. Jacob worked for Lavon for seven years to earn the right to marry Lavon's daughter Rachel. When it was time for the wedding, Rachel veiled herself as a sign of modesty, as was popular at the time. Lavon then veiled his other daughter Leah and tricked Jacob into marrying the wrong daughter. Jacob had to work another seven years before Lavon would agree to give him his other daughter Rachel. By unveiling the bride before she exchanges vows, the groom is sure to be marrying the correct woman!

You know the saying, "Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” is a popular rhyme that has been used since Victorian times. The "something old" represents the bond to the bride's family and her old life; "something new" represents the couple's new life together and their future hope for happiness, prosperity and success; "something borrowed" from a happily married woman is meant to impart similar happiness to the bride; and "something blue" represents fidelity and constancy.

No matter what ritual you decide to include use a symbol that is meaningful to you both.

Milo Paper - eco-friendly, spunky and colorful wedding stationery.

MILO paper
Milo Paper

If you are looking for stationery that has a little spunk, a little color and a lot of style, then you should look at another of my favorite eco-stationery vendors, Milo Paper. There was something about the colors that Maria L. Kalorides, the company CEO used that caught my eye. Finding out that they are environmentally-friendly sealed the deal with me.

Gracious to spend some time with me, this is a bit of our conversation.

Why would a bride/couple want to use you/your product?
All of our wedding designs are meant to be simple classic pieces with a modern twist. When I was getting married I always felt as if the choices were either too plain or too much. Also, the quality of our digitally printed products is extremely high even though our price point is very reasonable.

If you are eco/environmentally friendly, why?
We feel very strongly that it is important to support our industry's efforts to make environmentally responsible choices. We only print on recycled FSC certified paper and use only recycled FSC certified envelopes. And as we look to launch new products from time to time (such as our new notebook and boxed stationery lines), we make sure that they are always environmentally friendly.

MWhat about you/the company decided to focus your attention and show your commitment to the environment?
It's funny, prior to being the founder/designer for Milo Paper, I practiced law in various large law firms for many years where I was continuously surrounded by piles and piles of paper that always ended up just being thrown away despite everyone's efforts to save as much paper as possible. I think that image has always stayed in my mind because when we started Milo Paper the first thing I said to my partners (my husband Nico and my best friend Evelyn) was that I wanted to make sure that we would always be an environmentally friendly company.

What would be a price range for a direct purchase or do the couples have to go through retailers?
At this time, Milo Paper only offers its designs wholesale and they are available for purchase through our retailers. We are luck to have some incredible retailers working with us. A list of our current retailers is available on our website - we are in the process of adding several that will carry all of our wedding products.MILO paper

What is your turnaround time for product/personalization?
We aim towards a two-business day turnaround time for all of our products - and we're usually successful sticking to that goal. However, our official turnaround time is 2-4 business days.

I really like her designs, and friendly service. So if you are looking for something unique with a quick turn-around then look no further than Milo Paper.

Grooms, four-legged friends and wedding processions

Smithy Collodi
Do you have a dog like this one that you want to have in your wedding? Smithy is a Diva-dog. With beautiful golden hair, people have stopped him in the street to pet him and comment on how cute he is. Always the center of attention and if invited, would be one of the best-dressed dogs at any wedding. Maybe upstaging even the bride.

You may have a Smithy in your life – a family pet that you can’t imagine your wedding without. That’s great and will be amazing in a photo but there are a few things you should consider before you include him (or her).

Will the church or venue agree to have your dog in their place of worship/site?
Don’t be offended, not everyone likes nor wants dogs roaming around. I would strongly recommend, before you have your heart broken the day of, when you all arrive, clean and shinny and are told “no dogs allowed even if he is in a tux” ask first. Ask the moment you finalize your venue. This way you will know what to expect.

Will your dog behave?
Only you know if your pet, no matter how much you love him/her, has obedience issues. If they do, you don’t want him to disrupt the ceremony. Can you imagine him barking just as the minister asks, "if anyone has reason why these two should not get married, let him speak (bark) now, or forever hold his peace." I promise you, it would get some laughs, but your partner might not think so. Leave your pet someplace else until the group photo.

What are well dressed dogs wearing these days?
Well there are a great variety of tuxes, or to spare them embarrassment why not dress them in a non-toxic floral wreath, or satin ribbon in your wedding colors? This is something that is easy for them to wear and won’t be too annoying to your pet. Of course my friend (to the left) looks pretty dapper in his top-hat don't you think?

What happens when you want to party?
Ah…you’ve done the cute photo’s and now you want to dance or dare I say…eat? In your very expensive designer clothing, you don’t want your pal to climb into your lap like he does when you have on your sweats. Give someone the honor of making sure he has a walk (he will have to you know), make sure he’s fed and that he goes safely with someone at the end of the night as you go off on your honeymoon.

Of course if you are having your wedding at home, or you own your reception location, then you can do what ever you want. Good luck and don't forget the doggie-bag.

This article was written because I received a note from a groom-to-be asking what he should do about his dog. If you have questions, please send them to me at bridalease@gmail.com

Your wedding day - top 8 things to remember

The day is almost here. You’ve double, tripled checked everything. You are feeling good that your final count is done and vendors know where they need to be, when and where. So now, you think you can relax and just enjoy the fruit of your labor right? Not so fast. These are just a few things to think about now so you won’t have to worry about them later.

1 – Did you pay everyone?
Make sure that you have written all your final payment checks out a few days before your wedding and give them to your wedding coordinator, or your parents so they can make sure they are handed out the day of your wedding. This is not your job to handle, because at that point, you deserve to have fun.

2 – Who dresses you?
If you are one of my brides that has a ball gown or dress that bustles – make sure that someone knows how to do it. This is the one time - if no other to bring someone to your final fiting to pratice it. Why then, because you won’t want to put on your dress before your wedding and should it get dirty at the final fitting, it will be cleaned and presented to you fresh. There is nothing like having to drag around 4lbs. of material, because your maid of honor doesn’t know how to do it. Hmmm, now that I think of it, you can wear your wedding dress to have your photo's taken and perhaps the first dance, then change into something short and dance worthy if you like.

3 – Food, glorious food.
No matter what you think, you will not sit down and eat. I know you will try, but with you wanting to say ‘hi’ to everyone, taking pictures and of course dancing, you will forget. Have your wedding coordinator, best man or maid of honor feed you hors d’oeuvres and keep your glass full during the cocktail hour. I would also strongly recommend that you ask for a plate of food be put aside for you so you can eat when you get back to your honeymoon suite. Believe me at the end of the night, you will realize just how hungry you are and do you really want to hit McDonalds after spending all that money? I didn’t think so.

4 – Your bridal suite.
If you have a large bridal party, they will all want to crash in your room to change clothes. While it might be fun at the beginning of the day, at the end you will want some time to unwind. There is nothing like going back to your honeymoon suite to have your entire bridal party, partying when all you may want to do is sleep. If you can, get a separate room just for your changing with the girls. This way after your reception it's clean, quiet and you and your honey can truly relax. Of course if you don’t care about that, then disregard.

5 – Packing.
You’ve already packed your suitcase so this isn’t something you have to worry about. Let me say it again...if at all possible at least two weeks before your wedding (earlier if you can), pack what you need for your honeymoon. Leave your suitcase at the ready so this is one thing you won't have to worry about, days before the wedding when you will have other things to do. Believe me, there is nothing like getting to your honeymoon and realizing you forgot something (extra contact lenses, a tooth brush or paste, 1 shoe - I could go on)!! Also, make sure after your wedding that your best man has the grooms tux (if applicable), your maid of honor has your dress (again, if applicable) so all you have to worry about is each other.

6 - Leftover food and flowers.
If you have left over food, or flowers ask if they can be taken to a soup kitchen, instead of leaving it for the staff. They may have done a good job, but I think someone who has less than you, would appreciate it more. You may want to check with your hotel-catering manager when you make arrangements to see if they can do this or if you have to make the arrangements with an outside agency. Hey, it’s a good thing to do and will start your life together with good karma.

7 – Here’s to you!
Those toasting glasses you picked out especially for this day, all the gifts that people may have brought to the wedding, wedding ca-ching…make sure someone you trust (maybe your parents) see that all of it is are safe and taken until you return from your honeymoon.

Finally,
8 – Remember the moments that matter.
Make sure that you take a moment to step back and look at your family and friends at your reception. They are having a good time and when they say the day goes by in the blink of an eye, they mean it. So have a moment to enjoy it.

Until next time...

Crystal bling inspired eco chic soy candles

Aglow Soy Candle
Photo from Aglow Soy Candle

Having been in the fashion business in apparel for over 20 years, Ilyse Craft has always loved the home area and wanted to explore what that may look like. Also being a lover of candles and candle light....it just worked to move into this area. For Ilyse and Lindsay Downs, the companies other designer, being eco-conscious was never optional.

What we learned quickly is that in the world of "Eco" and "Green" there were many fashions in apparel and for the home that were more on the bland side and certainly there was a perception amongst many that to be "Green" meant surely you were going to have to give up style and glamour.

Aglow a Soy Candle Company is created with rhinestone and beaded encrusted appliqués on recycled glass are a keepsake. There is a magnificent array of symbols and initials (pick a letter!!) come fragranced and have a burn time from 60+ to 90+ hours and because of the soy based wax burn all the way down to the bottom and wiped clean for use later for so many different things!!

Whether the candles have been gifted to brides maids, on the tables at the rehearsal dinner, used for the Unity Candle, for the Sign in Book area, on the gift table, the bride and grooms table and/or the guests tables, it is a show stopper.

In the end, you my couples get to have the glass cylinders long after the wedding day is over and can use on their mantel or dining table in their home with flowers. Because the wick stem is so easy to remove (with Windex left to soak for about 10 minutes!), the small containers can be used for drinking glasses once they have been wiped out and cleanedand the large containers make a gorgeous vase for flowers. HOW COOL IS THAT?! Just be really careful to hand wash them to protect the appliqué and they will add such elegance to any table and a reminder of such beautiful and loving times!

We believe that is one of the key elements that really sets us apart, in the wedding arena more so but really in the world of gift giving and home decore. To have a beautiful and "Eco" conscious product that doesn't just stop at in the design and development process but take it all the way through to the end use....we have made it so beautiful that one thing you won't do is throw it away....and in the end there is just a little less waste in the world.

Our minimum order is 6 pieces however it can be of mixed styles. We have most items in stock, so we can turn an order around in 1 week. We strongly suggest that when the candles are being used/burned at the actual wedding (as opposed to being given as take home gifts), that one fragrance or no fragrance is used or a combination. The candles on the tables may be unscented and the other candles can be scented, of course we make suggestions and do whatever the Bride wants!!
If a letter or item is not in stock the turn around time is generally 3-4 weeks.

For more information or to purchase these candles, please visit their website:

Budget Brides - Photobooks create inexpensive wedding memories

I fancy myself a photographer and I'm pretty good at it if I do say so myself. With more and more people uploading pictures on facebook and or several photo sites, why not gather those pictures and create a wedding book yourself. This is also a great option for those of you who want to design a more personalized wedding album OR if you (as the guest of) want to give a collection of pictures taken of the happy couple.

Here are a few sites that are not only reputable, but provide a professional book. (note: they are at various price points, so think about how many pictures/pages you want to include before you make your final decision)

BLURB.com – Very simple to use and your photos are printed on matte paper for a true professional finish. Once the album is completed friends and family can purchase their own copy if they want one. www.blurb.com

IPHOTO Book – This is another simple program with a super quick turn-around. You can have Black linen or white paper in either a hard or soft cover. Sorry but this is for MAC users only. www.apple.com

KODAK GALLERY – We all know Kodak and their program is pretty straightforward. The fact that they offer a lot of options (paper style, color printing, matte or glossy finish) can’t be beat.
www.Kodakgallery.com

MY PUBLISHER – I love them for their choice of covers (linen or leather) and for it’s very professional options to create your own dream book. www.mypublisher.com

SHUTTERFLY – Like Kodak, it offers a storyboard that offers layout options and will truly walk you through the process. It has a special wedding format to give you ideas on how to create your book if you draw a blank. www.shutterfly.com

No matter which photo book-making program you decide to use, your book will be perfect – just like your wedding. Use this opportunity to put in some pictures from your engagement and include your wedding day to create something special and unique just like the two of you.
