Annual Filene's Basement Running of the Brides

Lining up early yesterday morning, one might have thought that they were seeing people on line for concert tickets, or the latest video game release, until you took a good look. They are all women, some with coffee, nervously chatting, at least three with “Team Costa” t-shirts and even a few in a football-like huddle. What would bring all these women to Union Square so early on a Friday morning? The annual Filene’s Basement “Running of the Brides” event.

It officially began at 8 a.m. with over 1,300 women, some waiting on line for hours, all on a mission. They were going to find the dress of their dreams by any means necessary. At this event, designer wedding dresses that normally range from $500 to $12,000 were a fraction of their original price. That means that today’s budget conscious bride could find her dress and pay less than 10% of its original value. A designer dress for less, who could pass that up?

As the doors opened, these brides-to-be pushed, raced, stepped over and even tripped others to have an opportunity to grab one (or more) of the 3,000 dresses that Filene’s had on its many racks. All of the employees quickly ran out of the way.

With no time for modesty, women huddling in their groups or in any spare space, stripped down to the bare minimum, to try on any number of dresses they were able to gather. As friends of the bride circled around looking for discarded dresses to bring to their bride, there was both bartering and swapping, all in an effort to find ‘the one’.

While I never took part in this event, it was a blast to watch. It reminded me of running a marathon. For many of these brides their medal was the perfect dress. After what may have seemed like hours, victory was at hand and the smiles on their faces said it all.

Congratulations - Your Engaged!!

Congratulations on your engagement, this is a wonderful time for you. You’ve met the person of your dreams, the mood was right, the proposal is a blur and 30-seconds after you have your new sparkly ring on your finger, you are already calling your parents and girlfriends sharing the news.

Some of you may have been dreaming of this day forever and have every detail already planned…or do you? The reality is that your dream might have changed since you were 10 and a pillowcase, was your veil. Times change, and the economic environment may have you re-thinking what’s really important on this day. Of course it’s completely normal to be excited but it’s equally easy to become quickly inundated with books, ideas, advice from every person you know.

But wait – where do you start, right here! I'm going to do my best to make this a pleasurable time for you. Think of me as your bridal fairy-godmother. There will be "keys" along the way. These are things that I think will help you along this amazing journey, so look for them. I'll keep you on track but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

To start, I would strongly suggest you pick a season, then venue, then the month. You may have your heart set on a venue but the dates aren’t available, but if you still like the ‘season’ you should be able to then find a date that is agreeable. Keep in mind that September and October are now just as popular as, May and June for weddings. The more places you call, the more disappointment you feel and then the frustration begins. Keep in mind that September and October are now the new, May and June for weddings.

The Key: Do all possible to eliminate stress. Be flexible. Pick a season, then month, then date. Know that it will all come together and it will be perfect.

Once you have your venue and date locked in, you should send ‘save the date’ information. This is an absolute must if you are having your wedding on a ‘holiday weekend’. You want to give people more than enough time to make their arrangements, especially for family and friends that have to travel to you.

Then relax! Unless you are planning to get married less than three weeks from the day you become engaged, you deserve this time with your honey to enjoy being engaged. Let the warmth of love and congratulations wash over you. Rest in the knowledge that you are off to a good start and there will be lots of fun days ahead. Don’t get me wrong there may be some stressful times, but I’ll help you get through it.

I promise!

Until next time,

Your Bridal Fairy Godmother,
