2009 EventProf Blog Winner - YIPPIE!!!

WOW!!! This is AWESOME!! So here is my 30 second 'Emmy' speech.

I am truly honored to have been considered and thank you for your votes. Winning this is truly a labor of love. Like so many of my colleagues, I want people to have a good time when they are at an event I'm hosting. I want to hear "that was the best party/wedding/baby shower/girls-night-out/grooms party EVER". I also want to provide you with the latest going on in this wonderful world of bridal (and you know I love my grooms), in the hopes it makes life a little easier. That's why I will have the interviews with your favorite designers, planners and venues. I bring you the latest information on having a 'green' wedding. I actually do a few taste-tastings (ok, so that's not so bad!!) and the products I recommend, I've at least tried before I recommend them to you.

By your votes, which I'm told were " the highest number of votes from your peers", it shows that you too appreciate what I'm doing and that makes me smile. I am honored by your trust!

So I'm being told that my time is up...the little light is flashing and the music swells....

I'm going to continue to do my best in providing you with the best information out there, and feel free to continue to let me know what's going on with you. Thank you all and starting next week, there will be new designer interviews, more goodies to give away (some special things for the grooms!!), new destination-locations and much, much more.

THANK YOU!
Much Love,
Your Bridal Fairy Godmother!!

Khloe Kardashian Odom...try putting that on a credit card.

It seems that they did it. After a month and giving new meaning to "rush to the alter", Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom got married yesterday at a private residence in LA...of course with video rolling. The bride was in Vera Wang and the groom was in a custom suit.

While texting and flashing her new rock (the engagement ring was reported to be 9 carats, no word on the weight of her wedding band but you know it has to be crazzzy!), Khloe Kardashian Odom (how many spaces is that on your email or credit card??) and the hubby, were photographed just outside a hotel in L.A. last night after they wed. I guess all that extreme-planning had Khloe tired.

Khloe and Lamar

There following comment was made and it made me think; "It's really wonderful that some couples in longtime committed relationships are allowed to legally marry in the United States." If you think it's right/wrong for gay/lesbians to marry is your own personal opinion and I'm not here to judge. People date for years and then decide to get married, only to get divorced. There are couples married for over 25 yrs and then they separate. Some date for weeks...and run to Vegas. Who are we to judge what happens once the CAMERAS go off...or for us normal people, when the doors close. I will just say that I hope that this was REAL and not just good TV for the 'real'ity show. Here's wishing them lots of luck!!

Part 4 Adventures in Curacao - Curaçao Renaissance Resort & Casino

Curacao Capital City
Curaçao view of the Capital City

Today we are conclude the four-part series on one of the most gems in the Caribbean – Curaçao. Today visiting the picturesque Renaissance Curacao Resort & Casino there is soo much to see and do I hope to give you enough information. The flavor is hot, the people are warm and the breezes perfect. After you read all four locations I choose you’ll see why it’s hard to pick a favorite place on this island. Should you choose Curaçao, any of their locations will provide an ideal backdrop as you begin your new lives together.

The Renaissance Curacao Resort & Casino is conveniently located in the historic capital city of Willemstad, Curacao. The resort is brand new, opening February 2009 and it is the first new hotel to open in Curacao in more than 15 years. Its downtown location makes it the perfect jumping off point for exploring Curacao's many attractions, yet the resort offers something that no other hotel in the downtown area can: a 32,000-plus square foot private Eternity Beach, the only one of its kind in the world. The Eternity Beach boasts white sand, palm trees and fresh ocean water complete with marine life - above sea level. The resort took the infinity pool concept and used it to create a gorgeous private beach area overlooking the ocean. The 223-room resort offers 14 suites, currently the largest in Curacao, as well as a luxury spa, the Aqua Spa, which occupies three floors at the historic Rif Fort and the top floor boasts a roof top relaxation area and an infinity pool hot tub overlooking the ocean. Of course, the resort has a team of planners that can assist the needs of the bride, groom and their guests. The groom and his groomsmen will enjoy the Carnaval Casino, which offers an elegant gaming experience from the latest slot machines to challenging table games.

What time of year are you hosting the most weddings?

Winter and early spring are traditionally the peak periods for destination weddings in the Caribbean. That has shifted a bit with the U.S. economy in a recession. Couples are looking to reduce costs by planning much more intimate ceremonies than they had wanted. But what we're seeing around the island is that couples are opting to get married in shoulder and off peak seasons, taking advantage of Curacao's pleasant year-round weather, instead of paring down the guest list or the reception. This will be the first full winter season for the resort, since we opened in February 2009. We are booking a fair amount of destination weddings for the winter season but we are also getting calls about non-traditional wedding periods as couples look to save wherever they can.

What are the best/signature experiences can a wedding party expect - or most importantly, if a couple is looking for a venue, why would they choose your space/island vs. another?

The Renaissance Curacao Resort & Casino offers several advantages that other resorts do not. The resort is brand new, from top to bottom. Nothing is outdated, worn or drab. Being new, it's also the "hottest" place in town. The Eternity Beach, aside from offering amazing views (especially at sunset!) it is private and it can be used solely for the wedding ceremony and reception. It can accommodate small to mid-size weddings and our events department can create an amazing reception experience, handling every last detail. The resort's location allows the bride and groom to explore the island. It's minutes from downtown and our in-house car rental company, watersports operator and tour operator can plan any type of excursion, from an intimate picnic by a waterfall to adventure activities. There's also the Aqua Spa, which offers nine treatment rooms, a Vichy shower, and a rich and varied menu of massages, facials, manicure, pedicure and hair treatments. The spa also boasts two relaxation terraces and a sauna with ocean views - perfect for bridal party bonding!

Tell me about the catering, bridal suite, adventures and anything else you want to share with a bride/couple.

Our catering staff can create a customized menu to match the theme and feel of any ceremony. The resort also offers 8,600 square feet of versatile indoor space, which can be used as a bridal / groom suite before the big event. The resort also boasts a state-of-the-art salon, offering custom packages and bridal services.

Can you tell me about marriage requirements, costs or restrictions?

Couples need to apply for a non-resident marriage license (USD$167), present a passport and birth certificate, proof of a legal divorce decree (if divorced) or a death certificate (if a spouse has died). No blood tests are required.

For more info: This is truly one of my new favorite places. For more information about The Renaissance Curacao Resort and Casino, please look at their site: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/curbr-renaissance-curacao-resort-and-casino/

Michael C. Fina Diamond Dash & a Cure for a cause

Michael C. Fina Diamond Dash
All photos with thanks from Michael C. Fina

There were lots of events going on in New York during Fashion Week however, this was a 'runway' of a different kind and for a good cause. Hundreds of couples dashed around Manhattan on Saturday, September 12th, in search of a $20,000 engagement ring, Hawaiian honeymoon and more as part of the “Diamond Dash: Dash for a Diamond & a Cure.” The event was sponsored by Michael C. Fina and Tacori, leaders in the jewelry and bridal industry. Winners Tom Weymouth and Katherine Gordon of Astoria, NY inched out fellow dashers by mere minutes to claim the grand prize and opportunity to propose live at mad46 Rooftop Lounge at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Michael C. Fina Diamond DashTom and Katherine took approximately 3 hours to complete the course, using a combination of subways, cabs, and sprinting to dash past their fellow competitors. Overcome with joy and surprise, Tom dropped to one knee and said, “Kat, I’d run anywhere with you.” Ironically, this wasn’t the first time the two had participated in such an event. “Kat and I love games and one of our first dates was a race around New York where we really bonded as a couple,” said Tom. “When we saw the Diamond Dash advertised, we knew it was meant to be. When we actually won we just couldn't believe our luck!”

The couple was greeted by the Fina family, who presented them with a 1.52 carat Tacori diamond in a classic Tacori engagement ring setting. It fit Katherine’s finger perfectly. “It has always been our belief that diamonds make a difference in everyone’s lives, and I think it’s safe to say this one will always remind Tom and Katherine of their dedication to one another,” said Steven Fina, VP of Michael C. Fina.

Also in attendance was Michael Osso, Executive Director of the New York City Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which proceeds of the dash benefitted. Dashers were encouraged to donate $100.00 to the society in lieu of a registration fee. Nearly $3,000 was raised.

Michael C. Fina Diamond DashEvent kick-off took place at 12:00 noon at Battery Park and text messaged clues led couples to various wedding-related destinations around Manhattan including Michael C. Fina, Hearst, John Allan, Tumi, Godiva Chocolatier, Ron Ben-Israel, Kleinfeld, and mad46. Pier 17, which is the start of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s annual Light the Night Walk, was also included in the route.

All dashers were invited back to Michael C. Fina upon the event’s conclusion to enjoy passed hors d'oeuvres, a selection of Godiva chocolates, and a cake tasting compliments of Ron Ben-Israel. If dashers chose to purchase a Tacori engagement ring that night, a special offer was provided.

Michael C. Fina will continue to demonstrate that diamonds do make a difference through December 31, 2009 by donating $100 to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for each engagement ring purchased. Never has there been a better time to propose.

Shoes go ski-high at New York Fashion Week

Fashion Week photo by Lisa M. Barr
All photos with permission of Lisa M. Barr

There are shoes, and then there are SHOES. I don’t know any woman (and some men) who wouldn’t love to strut their stuff down the fashion runway at least once in their life. It was evident to me by the number of people who were not only attending the Mercedes-Benz show at the tent in Bryant Park, but were waiting to catch a glimpse of those who were.

Yes there was the plethora of celebrities, fashion icons, and those in the fashion industry who are using these days to bring out their best fashion-wear. It’s not only the fashion in the tent that caught my eye, but also the fashion on the street that was equally as amazing.

Let’s talk about the heel. Some say that high heel were invented by Leonardo da Vinci around 1500 and were worn only by nobility. Around 1660 shoe maker Nicholas Lestage, designed the first heel that was over four-inches for Louis XIV. It wasn’t until 1904 that the ladies’ ‘pump’ a British invention reached America and around 1955 when the ‘stiletto’ became all the fashion rage. Thank you England!

Today you see the wide range from flat, to platform, to the ultimate in dream shoe Manolo , Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin not only on models but women who love shoes. Many brides have choose one of these designer shoes for their wedding including, yours truly. Manolo was my man, and I danced in his 4.5 inch heels all night long. What I discovered is that a ‘good shoe’, no matter the height is comfortable.

Of course I don’t know if you would wear any of these for your wedding, but they are absolutely fun to look at. What you should remember is to never be a slave to fashion, wear the proper size, make sure they are comfortable, and YOU own the shoe, not the other way around.

The Fingers and Toes have the look

All Photos Courtesy of Ann Lawlor

Did you know fashion designers and brides have something in common? A designer starts planning a collection the moment the pencil begins to sketch. The bride, truly begins to plan her wedding the moment the ring is on her finger. You both choose your colors, and create the feel and flow of every detail on that special day in your life. You both realize that the ‘finished’ look is from the top of your head, to the tips of your toes and all will be on display.

A chipped nail, or the wrong color nail varnish, takes away from the overall polished appearance for both the designer and you the bride. Believe me when I say that this may seem like a small detail, but it is a detail that everyone notices.

This year there are several color choices designers choose that will carry beautifully to your wedding day. As we continue to take cues from the runway, your nails on your wedding can carry a pale color or something that add that extra ‘pop’ if you want it.

I'm sure months went into choosing, creating and making sure the colors were exactly as the designers wanted. Head nail tech Pattie Yankee and her team, the ladies of Dashing Diva’s did a marvelous creating the perfect nail look backstage. Likewise, they were on hand to provide manicures/pedicures to models at several shows this season. These are some of my favorite nail fashion choices I'm sure brides can wear now.

At the Jillian Lewis show, she wanted a very light white crème polish for nails and toes. The color is light enough to go from wedding dress to honeymoon without being overpowering and is a great alternative to having a french manicure.

Rosa Cha wanted the models to have uniform, longer nails. So, Pattie and her nail team first applied Kiss’ Express On press-on nails before applying a bold, bright coral polish that’s hot for Spring 2010. The nails popped on the runway!

Gwen StaffaniHow much do we all love L.A.M.B? Did you know that Gwen Stefani always sports a solid white nail? Well, it was a given that if Gwen does, so would her models! For feet, Gwen wanted a bright orange/red mix to give a bold, powerful look for toes. I love this color combination especially for destination brides. It’s always lovely to see well-manicured toes peaking from under the dress. Then again, I love this combination on anyone, anytime of the year.

If you have warm creams or grey in your bridal party, then take your nail cue from the amazingly talented Caroline Seikaly. She picked a very soft crème grey for nails and toes to compliment her collection. With this in mind Pattie created ‘Astor Place’.

What I absolutely adore about Dashing Diva’s nail varnish is that it wore well on every model - no matter their color or complexion. That assures me that it will work well with you too.

If you’re not familiar with Dashing Diva, there are several locations in NYC. I realize that to some, this may seem like a luxury, but this is one you don’t want to skimp on your wedding day. People will be looking at your hands (they want to see the bling) and you would be very unfashionable rockin' un-groomed nails.

Thanks to the ladies at Dashing Diva - they know their stuff. If it’s good enough for the catwalk, it’s good enough for you as you walk down the isle.

Farah Angsana is a success during NY Fashion Week

Farah Angsana
Farah Angsana collection photos' by Lisa M. Barr

There is a great deal of anticipation and expectation of designers during Fashion Week. I can only imagine the planning, sleepless nights, and last minute questioning that goes into making sure your collection accurately reflects you. After all, YOU (the designer) are every dress, shoe or accessory that the public will see and eventually buy. Fashion writers usually set the bar high and at my first show of this season, Farah Angsana set the standard to be matched.

The Royalton hotel was the fitting location for woman whose collection exudes luxury femininity and elegance. Ms. Angsana is known for the fresh, cultural perspective she brings to the world of haute couture with her luxurious embroideries and rich colors. Where lavish, hand-embellishment and embroideries reflect her culture, each room was a visual feast for the eyes.

Inspired by Balinese goddess and Hindustan culture, each dress has a mix of mirrored embroideries, bead-works that were all done by hand in Paris and India she explained. While she couldn’t pick a ‘favorite’ dress, what is clear is her fabric of choice: of all variations of silk including chiffon, georgette, duppione and duchess.

There were several that I loved for bridal, but every dress should be considered for your special evening out. I truly look forward to seeing her bridal collection in a few weeks.

Celebrities such as Teri Hatcher, Carrie Underwood, Olivia Wilde, and Taraji P. Henson have worn her designs. For more information The Farah Angsana collection is currently sold at Neiman Marcus and specialty stores worldwide.

We Live for Fashion and Glamour

Ms. Wintour, all I can say is you REALLY know how to throw a party! Last night was everything it was hyped to be: amazing, exquisite, eye-candy, exciting and just good clean fun. On behalf of thousands of my new BFF’s, I want to say Thank-You. I had a wonderful time.

Beginning as early at 4pm, you could feel the level of energy picking up as more and more people began milling about and lines began to wrap around stores in anticipation of the evening’s events. Stores like Tiffany’s, Saks Fifth Avenue were rolling out their blue and red carpets respectively, in anticipation of what was to come. We all knew it was going to be a fabulous night (as everything Ms. Wintour touches is), but even this was beyond imagination. Nothing was going to spoil this night. Even the rain held off until late, so that everyone could truly enjoy the evening.

Some of the highlights were Oscar De La Renta, singing with Barbara Walters, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker their version of "There's No Business Like Clothes Business” making it completely ‘fitting’ for the evening.

Zac Posen painting dresses in the window of Bergdorf while Padma Lakshmi (who is super sweet and has the best skin ever!) was munching away at the designer cook off.

At Bloomingdales I spotted some of the “Housewives of NYC” and designer Monique Lhullier (who is 7 months pregnant and absolutely glowing).

While I stayed ‘up-town’, I met new BFF’s at the Joe Malone shop who were sharing stories about everything that happened downtown.

No matter where you were, it was a time like no other. People meeting people, making new contacts, celebrity sightings, fun, laughter and champagne at every turn. In the end, you went home tired, but feeling good.

While it was a fabulous night, with fabulous people, nibbles and goodies, let’s not forget there are people who are not as fortunate as we are. So do something nice – today. You can still drop off new or gently used clothes and shoes. Find locations on fashionsnightout.com. Just think of it as…fall-cleaning, ok more like making room for all the things you bought last night.

Thank you, Anna Wintour, Mayor Bloomberg, NYC Police, retailers and so many others who were really nice to us all last night. It was a great party; I’m happily exhausted but there are shows to attend in a few hours.

Welcome to New York’s Fashion week. Let’s keep it safe and continue the feeling of good will.

Be the bride on NY Fashion Night Out

Insert photo caption or credit her

With all the excitement of fashion week, there are several shops that have not forgotten about the bride and groom. Who did you ask? Well I’m here to tell you. I’ve gone through the list of designers & retailers and these are in the wedding (specialty) category. While I could write about each and every retailer, I’ve just noted a few that may have you thinking about your wedding in a different way. Again, every shop you go to tonight, will be offering you the opportunity to share in a ‘special discount’, gift with purchase or a little goodie just for you.

Realistically, attending every event is impossible, however I offer this suggestion. Remember bring engaged is ‘supposed’ to be a good time. I didn’t say always easy, stress-free or always fun. Let’s be honest about it. What I am suggesting is that, this list offers you options that you may not have thought of. Of course tonight has the ‘added benefit’ of a portion of your purchases going to a great cause the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, but these retailers would love to see you anytime.

ASPREY – Will be showcasing Vogue’s very own top wedding registry gift ideas BULGARI - Have you thought about a unique and meaningful wedding ring? Bulgari’s Save the Children ring and pendant. For their 125th anniversary, Bulgari has created a special ring and pendant; of which $60 will be donated to Save the Children’s “Rewrite the Future” campaign. Remember it’s sometimes better to give…

Of course as a bride, you have to look beyond tonight so here are a few tidbits for you.

Beginning today,The Bridal Atelier - Mark Ingram will begin his Fall Trunk Shows. There are some lovely designers coming up, so do put these on your calendar:

It’s Christmas in September with NYC Fashion Night Out September 10, 2009

You’ve heard about it, you have plotted your strategy on where you will go and tonight is the night. Some of the cities most fashionable shops keep their doors open until 11:00pm. Unless you have discovered how to clone yourself, it is humanly impossible to attend all 800+ shops and events tonight. In other words this is the one time not to be ‘fashionably late’ or for the faint of heart (or foot).

Think of it as a giant Halloween treat-or-treat night. Here are just a few highlights that may help you plan your path. You can create your itinerary as well as she what’s going on all night long. http://fashionsnightout.com/designers.php

The stars are coming out in full-force tonight. They will be at several locations and in some cases their own stores. So don’t think you’re seeing things if your favorite designer is ‘every place you seem to be’.

Here are some of my favorites who will be attending (not a complete list at all!):
Bergdorf Goodman (754 Fifth Avenue)
The prince of Vogue - Mr. Andre Leon Talley, Isaac Mizrahi, the shoe god Manolo Blahnik, Donna Karan, Zac Posen, Padma Lakshmi, Posh Beckham, Peter Som, Cynthia Rowley.

Barney’s (660 Madison Ave)
Isabel Toledo, Narciso Rodriguez, Amanda Brooks, Jonathan Adler, and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will be pouring the perfect NY Fashion Night Out cocktail.

Saks Fifth Avenue (611 Fifth Ave)
Justin Timberlake, Trace Ayala, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karen, Elie Tahari, Giuseppe Zanotti, Josie Natori, Ralph Rucci, and Sarah Brown.

Macy’s in Queens (Queens Center – 90-01 Queens Blvd.)
How appropriate that the Queen of the night Anna Wintour, will be at holding court along with Michael Kors, Blake Lively and the cast of “Hair”. I’m sure Ms. Wintour will be spotted at several locations throughout the city mingling. Without a doubt, this is truly her NYC party and we get the gifts.

The extraordinary good-looking Hugh Jackman and Chance Crawford will be at Jeffery (449 W. 14th Street)

Pharrell Williams will be on hand at his Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream Shop (456 West Broadway)

If you are looking for freebies/discounts:
Honestly, there are just too many stores to list.

Food? Did someone say Food?
After all the shopping you just may need a real meal right? I mean you have to keep up your strength. There are several restaurants throughout the city that are offering Complimentary special appetizer or dessert with purchase of entrée. All you need is an American express card to take advantage of these exclusive dining offers.

If you are wearing your best ‘sex-kitten’ heels and get tired:
Free Fashion’s Night Out Shuttle Bus
During Fashion’s Night Out, there will be free shuttle buses running in Manhattan 6–11pm. These special double-decker buses have been generously provided by Gray Line New York and Payless Shoe Source as the official ride of Fashion’s Night Out.

There will be uptown and downtown bus loops provided. Both bus loops will make their first two stops on Sixth Avenue between 35th and 36th Streets, and across from the Payless Shoe Source store at Fifth Avenue and 39th Street. Riders can transfer from an uptown bus to a downtown bus, and vice versa, at either of these locations. After each bus completes its loop, it will return to the starting point and continue the route again.

Don't just look like a millionaire, spread the karma...
Buy a Fashion's Night Out designer T-shirt and 40% of the proceeds will be donated to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center. Shirts are available for purchase at participating retailers throughout the City. If you can’t attend but want to do your part, check out Nordstrom.com, NeimanMarcus.com, Gilt.com, and RalphLauren.com as well as all the stores listed in ‘pink’

Neither rain, nor sore feet, nor crowds at night will keep a NYC Fashionista from one of the best events of the year. See you there.

Even Carrie Bradshaw would appreciate Fashion Night Out NYC 2009

The crispness in the air not only signifies back to school, fall – just around the corner, but also the preview of spring fashion 2010. Living in the fashion capital of the world has many perks, but this year, New York City is pulling out all the stops. They are going beyond the shows, beyond the celebrities, beyond your wildest fashion imagination.

Fashion’s Night Out is the official preview to fashion week. On September 10, all major retailers in NYC will have their doors open late – really late. Just think of it as 'Christmas in September'. While most of the festivities will begin at 6:00pm, there are a few stores that will begin at 5:30. Bergdorf Goodman is one of those stores who will begin early and they star-studded. Mr. Zac Posen, a personal favorite of mine will be there, as he paints one-of-a kind dress, which will be modeled throughout the store. I know first hand that Zac is talented – how? He created a one-of-a-kind dress for me. I stepped into the he picked and he cut (literally) the material around my body while I stood very still. Truly a master at work and a dress I will treasure always.

Just up the street on Madison Avenue, the grand dame of classic, Carolina Herrera invites you to “Come. Be Art,” with Larry Fink. Mrs. Herrera will fete photographer Larry Fink as he unveils his limited-edition book “Night at the Met,” a portrayal of revelers at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Apollo Circle Benefit in 2007. You are also invited to meet Mrs. Herrera and Fink and you can create your own photographs in a digital photo booth set up in the boutique.

At Jean Yu in Soho, you can have lingerie made-to-measure service—what an indulgence! How often do you have the opportunity to have your lingerie custom-made – perfect for your wedding night? A New York extravagance, this service (usually 25 percent on retail prices) will be offered at no additional charge. A do not miss opportunity!

While you’re downtown, Vera Wang will celebrate the night with American Idol judge Kara Dioguardi and other special guests at her ready-to-wear boutique located at 158 Mercer Street in SoHo. If you are more of an 'uptown girl, head to her Flagship store at 991 Madison Avenue, for expert wedding advice from Sylvia Weinstock, floral arrangements by Michael George and other special guests.

The men in your life may not be fashionistas but there are events for him as well. As you shop at Jimmy Choo just down the block , he can take a break and sample John Allan’s pop-up club in Barneys New York. John Allan’s will be offering complimentary cleanups, manicures, and shoe shines so you can look your best from head to toe. With every purchase of a hair, skin, or shave product from the John Allan’s line, you will also receive a special-rate gift card to experience John Allan’s signature Full Service (scalp-massaging shampoo and conditioning treatment, hot towel, haircut, manicure, and shoeshine).

While you’re out, keep in mind that proceeds from the sale of the official Fashion’s Night Out T-shirt will soon be donated to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. We all love great fashion and good bargains, but let’s not forget the men, women and children that won’t be able to enjoy this night. I can’t think of a better reason to buy a t-shirt.

In keeping with the good feeling that you are receiving, you can choose another way to give back. There is a city wide Clothing Drive that will take place, encouraging everyone to donate new and/or gently used clothing. The donated clothing will be given to the NYC AIDS Fund. If you click on the clothing drive link, you will find out which stores are taking donations. Please remember there are people that could use your help ESPECIALLY, during this hard economic time. Most of all, it is good fashion karma.

There are so many wonderful things going on, I wish it was two days. If you need help, here is a link so you can plan your night. What do I recommend - comfy shoes!

Have a great night – and isn’t fashion great?

What you need to know about attending bridal trade shows

Are you newly engaged and never been to a trade show of any kind? Let me tell you, even if you have been to a trade-show, a BRIDAL TRADE SHOW is unlike any you have ever been to before. There are a few things that will help you survive with as little stress as possible. Most of all plan to spend time waiting in line to speak with vendors as you will be with other brides-to-be wanting the same information.

I will be truthful and say that some shows are better than others. Some are larger and sponsored by a magazine like Bride, InStyle or The Knot, others by smaller wedding organizations. Each will bring their personal style and vendors. Go to one of each (I’m sure you will go to more than that), and you will see. Bring your fiancée – remind him that this process is a team effort.

  1. Wear comfortable shoes. Even if you are used to walking in 4inch heels all day, the stop/go of a tradeshow will make even the heartiest heel-wearer tired. I’ve seen more than one bride complain about tired feet after a few hours at a show. Bring some flats – you’ll thank me later.
  2. Bridal shows will take a long time – so be prepared to spend at least 3-5 hours (depending on the size of the show) walking, talking, listening, and tasting.
  3. Bring at least 2 working pens and paper. This may seem like a no brainier, but you will be surprised that when it comes to registering for give-a-ways or initially registering when first walk in, you don’t want to depend on borrowing a pen from someone. Worse yet, you don’t want to register only to find out that your only pen has run out of ink.
  4. Enter every ‘give-a-way’ that is offered. You could win everything from a honeymoon, to china, your gown or limo service. It only takes a minute, but could be worth a lot of saved money in the end.
  5. Want to make this an eco-friendly trade-show, bring pre-adhesive address labels, if you have them, or print some up on your computer. This will also save you a lot of time when you register for prizes. Most exhibitors will want to know your wedding date, so write it in. This is one of the best usages for those mailing labels that you get in the mail that you were wondering what you were going to do with them.
  6. This is no time to be shy. Ask lots of questions, that's why vendors are there. This is their time to answer your questions and for you to see how they respond. Listen to the questions that other brides are asking – they may ask something that you didn’t think of.
  7. If you see a vendor that you like, a table setting that is on display or a band that is playing a great song, write it down. Remember that paper and pen I told you to bring, print very clearly any information associated with that ‘thing’ you like. If you have a camera (or a camera on your cell) take a picture so you can remember. This is no time to trust your memory!
  8. Some of your best discounts will be given at the show. However, don’t be pressured into doing it. Remember there are lots of people to see and you may want to get recommendations from others who have used their services before you put down a deposit. Ask the vendor if they will extend any show sale price until you have time to look at everything and speak with your fiancé. Most will say yes, and if they say no, really think about it. Do you want to work with some one who is inflexible?
  9. Let me say this again…TAKE YOUR TIME!! Gather all the information you can and take it home. Relax, grab a glass of wine and then go through all your goodies with your honey.
  10. Bring your fiancé, your Mother and girlfriends. Give them a list of things you are looking for and in an especially large show, spread out. You can cover more space that way. Meet after 1 hour and re-group – share information.

I love a good bridal show. It’s a time to say hello to some old friends in the industry, make some new friends, as well as see what’s new for the next season. While I attend a great many of them, it still makes me sad to see the panic on the faces of prospective brides, or all the prospective grooms hovering near the bar wishing he was any place other than a show. These shows should be fun and if you come prepared it will be. Here’s wishing you a good show!

The little German’s Recipe File I: Riesling Chicken

Recently I've been eating chicken - a LOT of chicken. Sadly, not enough wine but my friends at "The Little German" have combined both to an easy recipie that I think is pretty good. Try it and let me know what you think. Think of it as...a great way to end the summer

Riesling Chicken

1 cup thick-cut bacon, cut into pieces 1/2″ wide

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

2 leeks, white parts only, rinsed and sliced thin

12 chicken thighs, skins removed

3 bay leaves

4 sliced mushrooms (crimini, shitake, oyster, or a mix)

1 bottle of German Riesling

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

3 tablespoons chopped fresh dill

Heat the oil in a deep casserole or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it slides easily across the bottom of the pot. Add the bacon. Fry until lightly crisped. Add the leeks and sauté for about one minute - do not brown them. Add the wine, chicken and bay leaves and a sprinkling of salt and pepper (the bacon will have already added some salt to the stew). Bring to the boil, then immediately lower the heat so that the mixture just simmers. Cover the pot and cook very gently for one hour. Remove bay leaves and add salt if needed.

Serve over buttered noodles (if desired). Sprinkle with the chopped dill.
