Wine Wednesday: Chambord anyone?

This past weekend, I was in Montreal attending the Bridal Boudoir conference, which is the wedding industry premiere bridal event in Montreal.  There is so much to share.  Lots of interesting trends that I’d love to see make their way to the US and while I get those articles ready, I’m feeling like my Wine Wednesday should reflect an elegant French inspired cocktail.

Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur is an all-natural raspberry liqueur produced in the Loire Valley of France. This lush, rich and very sweet cognac is often misunderstood, but I do believe will offer an elegant addition to your wedding events.  Known as the bottle with the gold crown, it is surely fit for a king and queen.  I hope you enjoy some of these cocktails, the yummy brownies and especially during this holiday season, please drink responsibly.

French Martini

1 1/2 oz Finlandia Vodka

1/2 oz Chambord Liqueur

3 oz Pineapple Juice

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into martini glass. Garnish with raspberries.

Chambord® Cosmopolitan

1 oz Finlandia Vodka

1/2 oz Chambord Liqueur

1/2 oz Orange Liqueur

1 1/4 oz Cranberry Juice

1/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into martini glass. Garnish with a raspberry.

Chambord® Velvet Jack

1 1/2 oz Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey

1/2 oz Chambord Liqueur 

3 oz Sour Mix

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into rocks glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Chambord® Margarita Royale

1 1/2 oz Herradura Silver Tequila

3/4 oz Chambord Liqueur 

3/4 oz Pomegranate Juice

1/2 oz Fresh Lime Juice

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into margarita or martini glass. Garnish with raspberries.

The Sweet Taste of Victory

2 oz Bourbon Whiskey

3/4 oz Chambord Liqueur

3/4 oz Vanilla Syrup

2 dashes Peychaud’s® Bitters

Shake all ingredients and serve in a Coupe glass. Garnish with any three of brandied blackberries, brandied raspberries or regular blackberries.

Café Royale

1/2 oz Chambord Liqueur

1/2 oz Irish Cream

1/2 oz Hazelnut Liqueur

1/2 oz Orange Liqueur

Layer all ingredients except Chambord in a port glass and top with Chambord-laced heavy whipping cream.

Chambord® Black Raspberry Brownies

1 box Devil’s Food Cake Mix

2 Eggs, lightly beaten

1/2 cup Oil

1/4 cup Water

1/4 cup Chambord Liqueur

1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

1/4 cup Confectioners Sugar (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9” by 13" baking pan with nonstick foil. Combine cake mix, eggs, oil, water, and Chambord Liqueur. Fold in semi-sweet chocolate chips. Pour into prepared baking pan and smooth. Bake 35-40 minutes. Cool to room temperature before cutting. Dust with confectioners sugar (optional) and slice brownies into 3" squares. Top with ice cream and 3-4 ounces of Chambord.

Yield: Approximately 12 servings.

Wine Wednesday: EFFEN Vodka

I know it seems like I’ve been talking about New York Fashion Week for a while now, but there was just so much going on!!  There’s still a bit more to share, but I really wanted to share today the Mercedes Benz Signature Cocktails.

A bit of Tuscany close to home: Wölffer Estate Vineyard

The Christian Wölffer Estate Vineyard, is a 55 acre winery located in Sagaponack, L.I., in the heart of the Hamptons. Upon your arrival, you’ll be immediately transported to a Tuscan Village. Founded in 1988, by Christian Wölffer has become one of the most sought out locations for events, especially weddings.

Upon entry, the floor to ceiling french doors, open onto a stone terrace bordered with hydrangeas, that kiss the Tuscan...I mean South Hampton sky. The use of classic fall colors like oranges, yellows and burgundy are perfect especially as we enter fall.  Then again, so are deep plum, blue and every imaginable green will work year round.  Let your color choice be, the splashes of color against the sun-kissed exterior of Wölffer, or the classic backdrop of a blue sky and ready-to-harvest vines. Even though the winery is 12,000 square-feet and over 55 acres of vineyards, it has a very intimate feel and extremely inviting. I always thought that if I got married in a vineyard, it would have to be in Napa.  However, did you know, you CAN NOT get married among the vines in Napa? Honest, it's against the law there (but I hear they're working on it!). Here at Wölffer, you don't have to worry about that.  They have a cute gazebo surround by acres and acres of fragrant vines if that's your choice. What a beautiful picture that will be.

Go for a visit year-round. Enjoy some wine and selection of artisanal cheeses. Bed bugs and honeymoons dont' mix

It seems that the outbreak of bedbugs is so intense that you can’t even go to the movie theater without the possibility of being attached by them.

When you’re traveling there are a few things you can do to try to protect yourself.

• Call your intended hotel and ask if they use bed bug proof bedding encasements. (Preferably made of comfortable 100% micro-polyether and not noisy vinyl material!). They may or may not tell you the truth, but I think that more and more are investing in preventative measures. Spending a few pennies now vs. paying with consumer complaints later.
• Just because it’s a 5-star hotel, don’t think it couldn’t happen there. It has. Look up your hotel’s history of reported bed bug cases. This can be found online at sites such as bedbugregistry.com
• It seems that bedbugs thrive in tropical, humid climates. That could be why NYC has seen the rise in them this summer. Take special care if you are traveling to a tropic island.
• Pack your cloths in giant Ziploc bags. At the very least, invest in luggage liners. They act as insulation protection and pay prevent them from coming into your luggage.
• Bring along a small flashlight. Why, this way you can inspect the bed board, mattress edges, chairs, drawers…just give the entire room a once-over. Better you spot them early, change rooms than wake up with bites all over your body. While bedbugs don’t carry disease, they are pretty uncomfortable. Indications of bed bug infestations include dark fecal spots, dried blood spots, eggs, and of course bed bugs – dead or alive.
• Don’t put your luggage on the bed, chair or any furniture made of cloth. Instead, use the luggage rack that should be provided in your hotel room. Ask for two if you have to.
• When you are packing to come home, put all your dirty clothes in a laundry bag (see that giant zip lock will come in handy), especially your intimates. Shake out your clothes and shoes before you pack them.
• While this is an uncomfortable subject, better a little discomfort now and a happy honeymoon than bed-bug-blotched pictures.

Choosing the right Champagne can be a challenge

Have some?  Yes, please.

Champagne, the nectar of the gods and has always been considered the beverage of choice for all kinds of celebrations. For your wedding, you may consider purchasing champagne for your toast, but what do you really know about it?

For example, did you know that European union laws prevent any sparkling wine produced outside of Champagne France to be called Champagne? Spain produces some great sparkling wines at truly unbelievable prices, which are called “Cava”. In Germany, they are called “Sekt” and in Italy, “Spumante”.
There are several houses (Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot, Freixenet, Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon etc.) I’ll have some great information and pairing ideas for you over the next several weeks, but I do invite you to ask any questions and to send me your views, on your favorite brands.

Champagne makes great aperitifs, are absolutely refreshing and when they are used to ‘introduce’, elevates any celebration. But what kind should you pick?

Brut: Very dry, best for hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, and served with fish, shellfish or chicken. So just think dry will be great for a seafood bar, oysters and especially lobster.

Extra dry: These are slightly sweeter than brut but not super sweet. This kind of Champagne is considered very versatile as you can order and serve it with the same foods as Brut, but also can accompany dessert. Actually, this is the perfect anytime drink.

Sec, demi-sec, doux: These are very sweet champagnes and truly reserved for dessert courses only. So serve it with your dessert bar and you can’t go wrong.

Honestly no matter which one you choose for your wedding, take a moment to enjoy the bubbles with your family and friends. I'd also ask your wine steward to save a bottle unopened and un-chilled, so you can have it to enjoy upon your return from your honeymoon!  I'm sure they will be happy to do that for you.

Next season, I’m sure the number of environmentally aware companies will double at the show. Remember its supply and demand. The more we as consumers demand (ok, so request in our best ‘out-side voice’) that companies listen to what we want, the more likely we will have it.

Walking across the sands of time....

I’m lucky. I have one of the best jobs on the planet. I love my PR business and clients (like Samantha), I enjoy living in Brooklyn (like Miranda) and a hopeless romantic (like Charlotte) and love a good pair of shoes (like Carrie….ok, I have tons of shoes, sans the closet). The anticipation of Sex and the City 2 is at a fever pitch and last night, the NYC premiere was INSANE!!

Today I hope to provide you with helpful information that will have you saying, “I want to go to the Kasbah for my honeymoon.” Tomorrow, let’s talk stationery and the finer details of a certain wedding….YOURS and how you can incorporate some of the SATC2 details in your wedding and reception. Friday a look from the male perspective: nothing like a well dressed man.

Ok so a warning…there are some SPOILERS here. I didn’t want this to just be about SATC so please consider having your honeymoon in Morocco. It’s a beautiful, friendly, safe and now ‘sexy’ city

1 – While they say they are in Abu Dhabi, the movie is actually filmed in Morocco. The team of SATC2 hoped to film in Dubai rather than Abu Dhabi, but were refused permission after the script was submitted for review.

2 – The beautiful sand dunes (Ait Benhaddou Ouarzazate ) where the girls ride camels and have lunch and cocktails are the same where “Lawrence of Arabia” was filmed. Getting into Morocco yes, fly Emirates airline as the service is wonderful. You may not want to sleep in the middle of a desert so you should check out the Mamounia Hotel or Riad 72. Honestly my ultimate favorite location is Kasbah Tamadot as it offers everything you can think of and then some. This is a Sir Richard Branson (yes of Virgin fame) property and the service will have you begging to stay forever.

3 – SATC stylist Patricia Field worked her wardrobe magic again, flawlessly mixing high and low-end pieces for stylishly innovative looks. She is a wonderfully talented woman (and really nice too!!). Are you looking for the Moroccan-type tunic you can get inexpensive ones Zara (corner of 42nd Street/5th Ave), H&M or more elaborate designs at Tory Burch. Finally, if you are wondering if the ‘shoes’ (actually they are leather pointy-toed slippers known as ‘babouches’) are actually $20 as “Carrie” says in the movie…well, mine were $8. Yes, I bought many!

4 – Did you wonder what the scene of Columbus Circle? Did you think, “Oh this is a great opening scene of NYC” well, it is, but did you know the Columbus Circle fountain is where Carrie and Aidan broke up? SPOILER ALERT: Is this a indication of what’s to come? You know the entire “full-circle” theory.

5 – The beautiful men at the pool are actually the Australian Rugby team. They were actually staying at the same hotel while the movie was filming and you can bet, they weren’t expecting this cameo moment.

6 – SPOILER ALERT: There are several keys throughout the movie proving everything isn’t “as black or white as it seems”. In other words…be careful what you wish for.

7 – MAJOR SPOILER ALERT: The theme of the wedding is ‘Old Hollywood’ glam; that means lots of sparkle. From the chandelier, floral arrangements, trees, the footbridge, champagne, the cake, top-hat and ‘tails’ to perhaps….another putting ‘a ring on it’. To cap of the GLAM, Liza Minnelli officiates Stanford’s wedding to Anthony before busting into Beyonce's 'Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It). Look for the ever stylish Tim Gunn to make an appearance.

Montreal an ideal destination wedding location pt. 2

Do you have visions of having your wedding in a city that is a pioneer in the area of sustainable tourism? Maybe a short distance from NYC with a true French flair? I have the perfect place in mind for you to consider Montréal, Canada. It is the perfect escape when Paris or the euro isn’t an option. A short 3 hr plane trip away, it makes a wonderful and quick destination location to enjoy every moment from your engagement (a quick weekend trip perhaps) until after you “I Do”. It has charm that matches Old Europe, the finest in dining, architectural innovation and historic grandeur. With all that in mind, have you ever thought of Montreal as having the ‘heat’ of Miami??

Montréal is the world’s first city to have received the National Geographic Society’s Geotourism accreditation. This makes is a wonderful location for all things eco-friendly from airport, hotels, registries, restaurants and parks. Le Cartet - 106, rue McGill is a great place to meet up with your wedding planner. The food is good and it’s a community space that is warm and friendly.

Grange vin+ bouffe - 120 Rue McGill, Old Montréal; 514-394-WINE The beef is amazing and the wine cellar is spectacular. They have a bottle for every budget and honestly, I would highly recommend this for the Beef (so perfect for the guys night) eater in your life.

Schwartz’s - 3895 Saint-Laurent Blvd. 514-842-4813 – You’ve got to stop here for the best ‘smoked meat’ (corn beef and pastrami ever!) sandwich ever. I believe the Reuben sandwich originated here. Thank you Canada!!

Oh no, someone left a dress, shirt (you fill in the blank)! Where should you shop?
Known as the ‘underground city’ because it’s over 20 miles (or roughly over 1,700 shops, 200 restaurants and 40 movie theaters – just in case you have time to take in a movie) of shopping underground. Just enter at the beginning of Ste- Catherine St. and walk toward the über chic boutiques on Sherbrook Street. You will find everything and I do mean everything.

Grooms: If you need a new suit/shirt/or even complete tux Moores located at 1007 Ste. Catherines Ouest 514.845.1548 has it all. I’ve been told they can suit you up in as little as 24hrs.

My favorite wine shop is just at the entrance of Complexe Les Ailes – Saq, M-31-677, rue Ste Catherine 514.282.9445. Here you’ll find those last second bottles of champagne or a rare whiskey to toast your new beginning.

Did someone say Chocolate? If you need a ‘fix’ Suite 88 Choclatier offers some of the best in all of Canada. There are two locations, but I was at the one near Plateau Mont Royal – 3957, Rue Saint Denis 514.844.3488

2 oz. SKYY Vodka
0.5 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
0.5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
0.5 oz. Simple Syrup or 1 tsp. sugar
Drop of Crème de cassis

Rim a crystallized Swarovski martini glass with Crème de cassis and sugar*. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into the martini glass. Finish the cocktail with a drop of Crème de cassis on top.

*To rim the martini glass, first dip rim of glass in a shallow dish filled with Crème de cassis and immediately place rim in another shallow dish with sugar, rotating the glass to ensure the whole rim is covered.

3 oz. 7Up
0.25 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
0.25 oz. Red Wine

Squeeze and drop half a lemon into a cocktail shaker. Add SKYY Infusions Grape and 7Up with ice and stir. Strain into a tall Collins glass with fresh ice, and float red wine over top of drink.

2 oz. SKYY Infusions Ginger
1 oz. Honey Syrup*
0.75 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled martini glass. Lay lemon peel twirl across the rim of the glass with cocktail pick.

*To create Honey Syrup, combine 0.5 oz. water with 0.5 oz. honey.

0.5 oz. Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon
0.75 oz. Cola
Combine SKYY Infusions Cherry Vodka, Wild Turkey Bourbon and Cola in a cocktail shaker with ice and stir. Pour into a double rocks glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
