Bed bugs and honeymoons dont' mix

It seems that the outbreak of bedbugs is so intense that you can’t even go to the movie theater without the possibility of being attached by them.

When you’re traveling there are a few things you can do to try to protect yourself.

• Call your intended hotel and ask if they use bed bug proof bedding encasements. (Preferably made of comfortable 100% micro-polyether and not noisy vinyl material!). They may or may not tell you the truth, but I think that more and more are investing in preventative measures. Spending a few pennies now vs. paying with consumer complaints later.
• Just because it’s a 5-star hotel, don’t think it couldn’t happen there. It has. Look up your hotel’s history of reported bed bug cases. This can be found online at sites such as bedbugregistry.com
• It seems that bedbugs thrive in tropical, humid climates. That could be why NYC has seen the rise in them this summer. Take special care if you are traveling to a tropic island.
• Pack your cloths in giant Ziploc bags. At the very least, invest in luggage liners. They act as insulation protection and pay prevent them from coming into your luggage.
• Bring along a small flashlight. Why, this way you can inspect the bed board, mattress edges, chairs, drawers…just give the entire room a once-over. Better you spot them early, change rooms than wake up with bites all over your body. While bedbugs don’t carry disease, they are pretty uncomfortable. Indications of bed bug infestations include dark fecal spots, dried blood spots, eggs, and of course bed bugs – dead or alive.
• Don’t put your luggage on the bed, chair or any furniture made of cloth. Instead, use the luggage rack that should be provided in your hotel room. Ask for two if you have to.
• When you are packing to come home, put all your dirty clothes in a laundry bag (see that giant zip lock will come in handy), especially your intimates. Shake out your clothes and shoes before you pack them.
• While this is an uncomfortable subject, better a little discomfort now and a happy honeymoon than bed-bug-blotched pictures.

Earth Day 2010: For your wedding day and beyond

While I love talking about weddings, there is a lot more to living a life with your partner once the party is over. On this 40th birthday of Earth Day, I wanted to share some great sites that you may not know of. Some are wedding related; some simply provide information that you can use right now – at the very least after you settle into life together.

I Am E. I’m loving this new way to throw up a ‘sign’. This eco-friendly movement that has been sweeping the nation. The E campaign which is being designed to give Earth Day a fresh face, draw new people into the environmental movement and inspires everyone to take positive action for the planet. We are just a few days until 2010 an if you are looking for someone to design your wedding (or maybe you need someone to get your last-minute New Years even party…), then by all means call Marc Wilson Design. Marc gets to know you, your vision and then brings it to life. When we met this summer – before the colors for 2010 were announced, he told me what he thought would be hot for this upcoming season. I’ve been looking through the almost 200 articles I’ve written since March 1, 2009. I’ve gone through and checked them twice. I’ve compiled my list of some of the many amazing vendors and/or locations I wanted to highlight once again. Why, because some of you are at the very beginning phase and others are toward the end. You never know if one of these vendors could be the answer to that last ‘thing’ you need.

I will say right up front that none of them are compensating me in any way to pick them, re-post anything about them. These are truly just a few of my favorites. This also doesn’t mean that I don’t love them all and think that they are all worthy it’s just…well, I wanted to do a round-up.

There are so many hotels, but I absolutely love the Crosby Street Hotel, NYC because of its British flare and fun. From a proper Hi-Tea, to a martini perfectly shaken, to your own private screening room, this is the place for you. Also, I picked this hotel because of their commitment to the environment as they will soon become GOLD LEED by the US Green Building Council making it one of the first hotels in NY to do so. We love a GREEN hotel that exceeds our comfort expectations right?

The Shorham Hotel, NYC – Chic, sophisticated and the ability to have your own red-rope makes this a modern space where the only limits would be based on your imagination.If you are looking for a little south beach flavor, the Shoreham is the place for an evening cocktail and where you can enjoy a little bit of Miami in midtown NYC.

The Liberty Hotel, Boston, MA – Gives new meaning to a lifetime commitment. A converted prison in the historic Beacon Hill section of Boston is beautiful. Exposed brick and yes even some of the original jail bars add a unique touch and added fun for your pictures.

Gansevoort South Beach Hotel, Miami, Fla – It’s south beach – what more can you say. The food, flavor and flare is hot, hot, hot!

There are certain things that make every bride happy on her wedding day: Her groom arriving on time and sober, her perfect dress and of course, her reception looking better than she imagined. The first two…pretty easy, but the third you are trust that someone will make your vision, your wedding dream a reality. Of course you know Collin, Preston but do you know Marc? I caught up with Marc at his studio for a few moments to discuss the upcoming bridal season. Marc, tell me about the trends you see happening this year?

"If you think about home décor trends over the last few years, all those colors the pantone forecast colors have made their way from the pages of magazine and those charts through the fashion industry and now more and more in the event design industry. So I pay attention to those, but I also work with the bride to make sure on her wedding day she isn’t disappointed.

This season the colors I’ve seen include honey gold/yellow, warm olive, burnt sienna, Rapture Rose, American beauty. These are some really beautiful colors and I have created great combinations for the bride that wants to be a little more daring and get away from the very traditional ivory linens. For a winter wedding why not go with deep Amethyst and Gun Metal (silver)? It would add unexpected richness and warmth to the reception. I often recommend that they go bold and make a statement at their reception. For the 2010 spring season, the more popular colors include Tomato Puree, Fusion Coral, Violet, Tuscany, Pink Champagne, Dried Herb, Aurora and Amparo Blue to name a few. However, Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise was just named "the color of the year". I'm looking forward to using it in our upcoming designs and seeing where else it pops up throughout the year".

What should a couple do before they meet with you? How should they prepare? "Well, just come with some ideas of what you’re thinking of. If would be helpful if you have an idea of where you’re going to have the reception – this way I have an idea of the size of the venue. I know that brides go through all the magazines, so come in with clips of colors you like, pictures of locations you like. Know your budget. We can work together to build the best of these things to create a space that is unique and special".

You’ve heard about it, you have plotted your strategy on where you will go and tonight is the night. Some of the cities most fashionable shops keep their doors open until 11:00pm. Unless you have discovered how to clone yourself, it is humanly impossible to attend all 800+ shops and events tonight. In other words this is the one time not to be ‘fashionably late’ or for the faint of heart (or foot).

Shermain Jeremy, tourism officer, for the Antigua and Barbuda Department of Tourism, spent some time speaking with me about her beautiful country. The more she spoke, the more I wanted to hop on the next flight to see it for myself. Of course, my job is to ask the questions for you about getting married in Antigua and Barbuda, so here is a bit of our conversation.

Can you tell me about Antigua and Barbuda and opportunities for weddings there?

Most of the hotels on Antigua and Barbuda offer wedding and honeymoon packages and come ready with wedding planner, marriage officer, venue etc. Couples also have access to other romantic and picturesque aspects of the islands where they can host their own personalized wedding.

What are the heavy times of year you're seeing brides?

June, which is also considered as the Romance Month in Antigua and Barbuda. This is also really good to note if you have readers who are considering getting engaged and want to create a surprise. Our Romance Month gives a wonderful and additional option to Valentine’s Day, when so many people get engaged.

What are the best/signature experiences can a wedding party expect - or most importantly, if a couple is looking for a venue, why would they choose your space vs. another venue?

Antigua and Barbuda is considered the Vegas of the Caribbean because couples can get married in a day, even cruise ship travelers can enjoy same day weddings. There is no residency requirement. Antigua and Barbuda is rich in culture, history and natural beauty and serves as the perfect backdrop to any wedding.

Get carried away to St. Lucia for your destination wedding

What are the requirements necessary to get married here?

Amendments to the wedding regulations make it easier than ever for visitors to marry on Saint Lucia. Two types of marriage licenses have been created, an Ordinary license and a Special license.

Ordinary License-

The ordinary License is when the application -- an affidavit and a petition -- have been submitted at least seven days prior to the date of marriage.

Special License-

The new amendment gives the attorney general the power to issue a special marriage license for an application submitted less than seven days before the date of marriage. Visitors can even apply for a special license on the same day of the marriage, providing all required documentation is available.

Couples planning to marry on Saint Lucia should bring the following required documentation, which includes certified true copies or originals:

* Passport
* Birth Certificate
* Decree Absolute (if one of the parties is divorced)
* In the case of a widow/widower a Death Certificate of first spouse is required
* If a name has been changed, a Deed Poll is required
* If one of the parties is under the age of 18, evidence of a consent of parents is required in the form of a sworn affidavit stamped by a Notary Public

Application to be married in Saint Lucia must be made by a local solicitor to the Attorney General or notary who prepares and signs the license. Weddings are not generally conducted during weekends or holidays, so if you are interested in a weekend or holiday wedding, you will need to check with the wedding coordinator to be sure that it can be arranged.

Destination wedding: Somerset on Grace Bay on the islands of Turks and Caicos

This week kicks off an on-going series of, destination wedding locations. There will be information on various Caribbean islands, private islands, and all that they have to offer. With so many to choose, it can be daunting but it is my hope to provide you with information that you can use. With this in mind, let's start off with a place that is gaining in popularity as a wedding location, Turks and Caicos and one of their beautiful properties.

With increasingly popularity of destination weddings and perhaps for people looking to finding a more intimate island, The Somerset on Grace Bay, a five-star property in the Providenciales of Turks and Caicos Islands is the ideal location. The 3hr flight to the hotel can provide a formal reception in the ‘all-white O’Soleil restaurant; if you are feeling ‘international’ or want to have a go at a local sport, you can have an ‘all-white croquet attire’ for a match on the lawn or better yet and my personal favorite an ‘all-white fireworks display shooting into the clear sky the evening of your wedding (so you don’t have to wait until our 4th of July to have your marriage start off with fireworks!). No matter the size, style or desire of your wedding, The Somerset offers all ‘white-glove service’ that is second to none and considered one of the leading choices for destination weddings.

There are seven ceremony and reception locations on the property and at select locations can accommodate up to 200 of your closest friends/family. There are several things I like about this property but some of my favorites include the restaurants – the food is amazing, the pools (two of them are freshwater) and there are tennis courts and an 18-hole championship golf course (I didn’t butcher it up too much with my swing). Some of the other things that were great about the suites, the ability to have groceries in my refrigerator and aBBQ was just outside, as well as a washer/dryer so I could wash my clothes before I left and come home with clean things. That was a very cool bonus. This was truly like having your own mini-apartment with all the benefits of a hotel.

The Somerset wedding packages start $2,800 to $3,100 and includes having a personal wedding coordinator, the Officiant, processing of all your documentation and License, the ceremony, a soloist and in-suite massages. There are additional prices for various menu options depending on what you wish. They have amazing appetizers, selections and the presentations are some of the most creative I’ve seen. Let me be clear there is an additional prices for fireworks, tenting and photography so please check out all of these before you make your final decision. No mater what the final cost, I believe it will be much less expensive than for the same quality here in NY.

This is what you need to have if you plan on getting married on the island. All ORIGINAL documents must be presented to the Turks and Caicos Registrar of Marriages by the person completing the forms. Original documents to be presented in person are:

1. Passport
2. Original Birth Certificate
3. Proof of marital status - If single a sworn affidavit is required
4. If one of the parties is a divorcee, then a Divorce Decree is required, either the original or a notarized copy, sealed by a Court Clerk
5. In the case of a Widow/Widower a Death Certificate of the previous spouse is required
6. In the case of change of name by Deed Poll or Adoption, then proof is required
7. If under the age of 21, then consent of one or both parents or guardian, in the form of an affidavit stamped by a Notary Public
8. A declaration for each party must be filled in, wherein you state your occupation and other necessary information
9. The marriage parties must not be within the prohibited degree of relationships to each other
10. Status, age as of last birthday, present address of residence and fathers full name
11. For church weddings Ministers may require proof of membership
12. Please be advised that any Passports or documentation written other than in English should be translated in advance and notarized by the applicable consulate
13. Because the processing of the marriage license takes from 2-3 days, we recommend that you need to be in the Turks and Caicos Islands at least seventy-two (72) hours before your wedding ceremony. (I would recommend you verify this time frame with your wedding coordinator BEFORE you leave).
14. $50.00 in U.S. currency is required

If you crave 5-star treatment, and unparallel treatment consider The Somerset on Grace Bay. What’s more, I’ve been told that there are rates that begin at $350 per night from now until Oct 30, 2009 if you are interested in a quick get away.

The Franklin Hotel – warm, personalized, welcoming wedding boutique hotel

I must admit, I try to stay on the cutting-edge of trends and am happy to say that I was right about this one. Boutique Hotels are HOT in 2009. They are hot for several reasons but what keeps coming up is the personalization of the staff and the European quality and attention that you won’t get in a larger hotel.

The Franklin Hotel which is a Willow Hotel property is not like any of the other properties. From the moment before the moment you enter, you are transported from the Upper East Side, to a villa in the South of France. This gem of a hotel has all the modern services: wireless Internet, 24-hr cappuccino/espresso, European Buffet Breakfast, Wine & Artisanal Cheese Reception and they are Pet Friendly. I know…what more can you ask for right?

I met with manager Jason Mancuso, the general manager of the hotel. He along with his charming staff, made me feel welcomed, but it was as if I was at an intimate bed and breakfast a world away. A friendly staff and attentive manager are an absolute bonus especially in the middle of a busy city.

The Franklin bride is a carefree, woman who enjoys Europe, fine wine, simplicity and romance. With 50 rooms, each uniquely designed, you will be able to relax either before or after your wedding here. Just block away from shopping and museum row, your guests will have something to see and do should they come before or stay after your wedding.

Making sure that attention to the smallest detail is attended to, you don’t have to worry. Jason explained to me “Putting ourselves in the minds of our guests, we want to make their experience memorable. I believe this attention to detail is why we have numerous repeat guests. For example, we realize that after a long day of shopping or touring they may want a ‘snack’, so we offer a complimentary wine and cheese selection in the afternoon so they can relax. We want our guests to feel as if they are at home.”

I will say that as I was speaking with Jason, a guest overheard our conversation and said that it was their 4th time in NY and they have been back to the Franklin hotel 3 times because of the care and family-feeling they received each and every time.

The Franklin is so popular yet ‘hidden’, don’t be surprised if you are riding the elevator and see a celebrity or two. Compared to some of the other hotels where you can have your actual ceremony and reception, this is not available at this hotel. However, if you wanted to have a pre or post wedding cocktail reception for your bridal party, bridal shower or tea, this is perfect. In addition, if you are looking for a hotel for your guests (and have 50 rooms being booked) you can rent the entire hotel. How Cool is THAT?! Yes, your own private hotel on the Upper East Side.

The three words that can be associated with this hotel are: personalized, warm and welcoming. After spending time with Jason and his staff, I know I didn’t want to leave.
