Bed bugs and honeymoons dont' mix

It seems that the outbreak of bedbugs is so intense that you can’t even go to the movie theater without the possibility of being attached by them.

When you’re traveling there are a few things you can do to try to protect yourself.

• Call your intended hotel and ask if they use bed bug proof bedding encasements. (Preferably made of comfortable 100% micro-polyether and not noisy vinyl material!). They may or may not tell you the truth, but I think that more and more are investing in preventative measures. Spending a few pennies now vs. paying with consumer complaints later.
• Just because it’s a 5-star hotel, don’t think it couldn’t happen there. It has. Look up your hotel’s history of reported bed bug cases. This can be found online at sites such as bedbugregistry.com
• It seems that bedbugs thrive in tropical, humid climates. That could be why NYC has seen the rise in them this summer. Take special care if you are traveling to a tropic island.
• Pack your cloths in giant Ziploc bags. At the very least, invest in luggage liners. They act as insulation protection and pay prevent them from coming into your luggage.
• Bring along a small flashlight. Why, this way you can inspect the bed board, mattress edges, chairs, drawers…just give the entire room a once-over. Better you spot them early, change rooms than wake up with bites all over your body. While bedbugs don’t carry disease, they are pretty uncomfortable. Indications of bed bug infestations include dark fecal spots, dried blood spots, eggs, and of course bed bugs – dead or alive.
• Don’t put your luggage on the bed, chair or any furniture made of cloth. Instead, use the luggage rack that should be provided in your hotel room. Ask for two if you have to.
• When you are packing to come home, put all your dirty clothes in a laundry bag (see that giant zip lock will come in handy), especially your intimates. Shake out your clothes and shoes before you pack them.
• While this is an uncomfortable subject, better a little discomfort now and a happy honeymoon than bed-bug-blotched pictures.

Walking across the sands of time....

I’m lucky. I have one of the best jobs on the planet. I love my PR business and clients (like Samantha), I enjoy living in Brooklyn (like Miranda) and a hopeless romantic (like Charlotte) and love a good pair of shoes (like Carrie….ok, I have tons of shoes, sans the closet). The anticipation of Sex and the City 2 is at a fever pitch and last night, the NYC premiere was INSANE!!

Today I hope to provide you with helpful information that will have you saying, “I want to go to the Kasbah for my honeymoon.” Tomorrow, let’s talk stationery and the finer details of a certain wedding….YOURS and how you can incorporate some of the SATC2 details in your wedding and reception. Friday a look from the male perspective: nothing like a well dressed man.

Ok so a warning…there are some SPOILERS here. I didn’t want this to just be about SATC so please consider having your honeymoon in Morocco. It’s a beautiful, friendly, safe and now ‘sexy’ city

1 – While they say they are in Abu Dhabi, the movie is actually filmed in Morocco. The team of SATC2 hoped to film in Dubai rather than Abu Dhabi, but were refused permission after the script was submitted for review.

2 – The beautiful sand dunes (Ait Benhaddou Ouarzazate ) where the girls ride camels and have lunch and cocktails are the same where “Lawrence of Arabia” was filmed. Getting into Morocco yes, fly Emirates airline as the service is wonderful. You may not want to sleep in the middle of a desert so you should check out the Mamounia Hotel or Riad 72. Honestly my ultimate favorite location is Kasbah Tamadot as it offers everything you can think of and then some. This is a Sir Richard Branson (yes of Virgin fame) property and the service will have you begging to stay forever.

3 – SATC stylist Patricia Field worked her wardrobe magic again, flawlessly mixing high and low-end pieces for stylishly innovative looks. She is a wonderfully talented woman (and really nice too!!). Are you looking for the Moroccan-type tunic you can get inexpensive ones Zara (corner of 42nd Street/5th Ave), H&M or more elaborate designs at Tory Burch. Finally, if you are wondering if the ‘shoes’ (actually they are leather pointy-toed slippers known as ‘babouches’) are actually $20 as “Carrie” says in the movie…well, mine were $8. Yes, I bought many!

4 – Did you wonder what the scene of Columbus Circle? Did you think, “Oh this is a great opening scene of NYC” well, it is, but did you know the Columbus Circle fountain is where Carrie and Aidan broke up? SPOILER ALERT: Is this a indication of what’s to come? You know the entire “full-circle” theory.

5 – The beautiful men at the pool are actually the Australian Rugby team. They were actually staying at the same hotel while the movie was filming and you can bet, they weren’t expecting this cameo moment.

6 – SPOILER ALERT: There are several keys throughout the movie proving everything isn’t “as black or white as it seems”. In other words…be careful what you wish for.

7 – MAJOR SPOILER ALERT: The theme of the wedding is ‘Old Hollywood’ glam; that means lots of sparkle. From the chandelier, floral arrangements, trees, the footbridge, champagne, the cake, top-hat and ‘tails’ to perhaps….another putting ‘a ring on it’. To cap of the GLAM, Liza Minnelli officiates Stanford’s wedding to Anthony before busting into Beyonce's 'Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It). Look for the ever stylish Tim Gunn to make an appearance.

While I love talking about weddings, there is a lot more to living a life with your partner once the party is over. I’ve been looking through the almost 200 articles I’ve written since March 1, 2009. I’ve gone through and checked them twice. I’ve compiled my list of some of the many amazing vendors and/or locations I wanted to highlight once again. Why, because some of you are at the very beginning phase and others are toward the end. You never know if one of these vendors could be the answer to that last ‘thing’ you need.

The Crosby Street Hotel NYC brings London to US brides

Tucked away on a cobble-stoned street amply called Crosby Street is the newly opened Crosby Street Hotel. From the moment you enter you are transported from the busy streets of Soho, to charm of London. There is so much to take in almost immediately. The giant lettered head sculpture, the paper-Mache cartooned dogs and the fabric on the walls calling you to touch them. Yet all of this is perfectly matched as Jazz plays softly through their soundsystem.

The Crosby Street Hotel New York, is the newest gem of the Firmdale Hotel (UK) collection and gem it is. Located in Soho between Prince and Spring, the Crosby hotel takes into account the charm of Soho and adds a British twist. The interior design and unique décor is the passion of award winning Kit Kemp, owner of the London based Firmdale Hotels herself. There are also unique sculptures by Jaune Plensa that you will adore and be amazed by.

As luck would have it, or maybe it was simply asking because of this article, I was given the grand tour of this luxury hotel by Craig Markham Dir of Marketing and PR.

First and foremost and I know a lot of hotels say this but you will truly have personalized service. Here like in their UK locations you will receive “white-gloved” service that is an unexpected pleasure. There are 86 unique and individualized bedrooms and suites on the 11 floors each having high ceilings and full length, ceiling to floor warehouse-styled windows. There is a drawing room with fireplace, courtyard gardens, and a state of the art screening room (just in case you want to show a movie of how you met).

“The goal was to create a place with comfort at every corner. Every room or suite has everything amenity that you could possibly need; we try our best to exceed our guests expectations. By creating a garden oasis we have made sure that none of the rooms are opened to a ‘wall’. There will always be natural light streaming through the rooms or the twinkle of the lights from the garden at night. Every detail was created to make sure that your stay would be memorable.

In any of the private event rooms you can have the privacy you desire with all the opulence you could dream of. Use the “Lafayette room” for your welcome cocktail and then use both the Prince and Spring rooms for your dinner and dancing. I really love the idea of hosting a private ‘movie’ using the screening room.” How many other places can offer you this – your very own movie theater for the night??

Finally, this hotel is committed to you, your guests and the environment as they will soon become GOLD LEED by the US Green Building Council making it one of the first hotels in NY to do so. So you can feel good about having your wedding, rehearsal dinner or any event here as if you needed another reason.

I’ll say that I have a fondness for things British. I attended graduate school there, ‘found myself’ there, and go back when time and the dollar conversion allow. The whimsical details, charm and proper high tea at The Crosby reminded me of some of the best days of my life. Long live the Queen, and long may The Crosby Hotel reign.

Part 4 Adventures in Curacao - Curaçao Renaissance Resort & Casino

Today we are conclude the four-part series on one of the most gems in the Caribbean – Curaçao. Today visiting the picturesque Renaissance Curacao Resort & Casino there is soo much to see and do I hope to give you enough information. The flavor is hot, the people are warm and the breezes perfect. After you read all four locations I choose you’ll see why it’s hard to pick a favorite place on this island. Should you choose Curaçao, any of their locations will provide an ideal backdrop as you begin your new lives together.

The Renaissance Curacao Resort & Casino is conveniently located in the historic capital city of Willemstad, Curacao. The resort is brand new, opening February 2009 and it is the first new hotel to open in Curacao in more than 15 years. Its downtown location makes it the perfect jumping off point for exploring Curacao's many attractions, yet the resort offers something that no other hotel in the downtown area can: a 32,000-plus square foot private Eternity Beach, the only one of its kind in the world. The Eternity Beach boasts white sand, palm trees and fresh ocean water complete with marine life - above sea level. The resort took the infinity pool concept and used it to create a gorgeous private beach area overlooking the ocean. What time of year are you hosting the most weddings?

Winter and early spring are traditionally the peak periods for destination weddings in the Caribbean. That has shifted a bit with the U.S. economy in a recession. Couples are looking to reduce costs by planning much more intimate ceremonies than they had wanted. But what we're seeing around the island is that couples are opting to get married in shoulder and off peak seasons, taking advantage of Curacao's pleasant year-round weather, instead of paring down the guest list or the reception. This will be the first full winter season for the resort, since we opened in February 2009. We are booking a fair amount of destination weddings for the winter season but we are also getting calls about non-traditional wedding periods as couples look to save wherever they can.

What are the best/signature experiences can a wedding party expect - or most importantly, if a couple is looking for a venue, why would they choose your space/island vs. another?

Another building of great historical importance on the Avila grounds is the cheerful seaside cupola known as the Octagon because of its octagonal shape. Around 1812, the sisters of the Venezuelan liberator Simon Bolivar lived at the Octagon during their years of exile from the Venezuelan independence war against Spain. Today this building is a much-sought venue to host elegant wedding ceremonies and receptions. The top of our chart is a wedding ceremony at the historic Octagon tower museum with ocean view and authentic colonial antique furnishings. It’s like taking an elegant step back in time! After the ceremonies a torch-lit, sit-down dinner on the beach is the perfect ending to an unforgettable day. The “Queen’s beach” is a favorite. This is a unique private beach which can be served for a private wedding ceremony, toast and or dinner.

Can you tell me about marriage requirements, costs or restrictions?

Avila Hotel –The Avila Hotel events department works with a handful of qualified and reputable 3rd party wedding planners who have the expertise to guide the couple planning to get married in Curaçao through the legal requirements. Costs vary and are quoted on a case-by-case basis. The basic legal requirements to legally get married in Curaçao are summarized as follows:

First, you have to write a letter stating you want to get married on the island of Curacao. List 2 dates that you would like to have your marriage to take place, put 1st option and 2nd option. Also in the letter you have to specify if you would like the marriage to take place at the registry office or outside. This letter has to be signed by both Bride and groom. In the letter please inform us both Bride and Grooms actual address.( Email letter is not applicable, it can be a scanned letter but signed by both)

Second, you need an original copy of both Bride and groom’s Birth certificate. It has to be an apostille and not more than 1 year old.

Third, you need a original copy of both Bride and groom’s Citizenship. It has to be apostille and not more than 6moths old. If one of the partners was divorced we need a original copy of his of her’s Divorce decree.

Get carried away to St. Lucia for your destination wedding

What are the requirements necessary to get married here?

Amendments to the wedding regulations make it easier than ever for visitors to marry on Saint Lucia. Two types of marriage licenses have been created, an Ordinary license and a Special license.

Ordinary License-

The ordinary License is when the application -- an affidavit and a petition -- have been submitted at least seven days prior to the date of marriage.

Special License-

The new amendment gives the attorney general the power to issue a special marriage license for an application submitted less than seven days before the date of marriage. Visitors can even apply for a special license on the same day of the marriage, providing all required documentation is available.

Couples planning to marry on Saint Lucia should bring the following required documentation, which includes certified true copies or originals:

* Passport
* Birth Certificate
* Decree Absolute (if one of the parties is divorced)
* In the case of a widow/widower a Death Certificate of first spouse is required
* If a name has been changed, a Deed Poll is required
* If one of the parties is under the age of 18, evidence of a consent of parents is required in the form of a sworn affidavit stamped by a Notary Public

Application to be married in Saint Lucia must be made by a local solicitor to the Attorney General or notary who prepares and signs the license. Weddings are not generally conducted during weekends or holidays, so if you are interested in a weekend or holiday wedding, you will need to check with the wedding coordinator to be sure that it can be arranged.

Back in the 1980’s there was a show called “Fantasy Island.” People would fly to a remote Private Island and “Mr. Roark”; the manager would make their fantasy come true. This week kicks off an on-going series of, destination wedding locations. There will be information on various Caribbean islands, private islands, and all that they have to offer. With so many to choose, it can be daunting but it is my hope to provide you with information that you can use. With this in mind, let's start off with a place that is gaining in popularity as a wedding location, Turks and Caicos and one of their beautiful properties.

With increasingly popularity of destination weddings and perhaps for people looking to finding a more intimate island, The Somerset on Grace Bay, a five-star property in the Providenciales of Turks and Caicos Islands is the ideal location. The 3hr flight to the hotel can provide a formal reception in the ‘all-white O’Soleil restaurant; if you are feeling ‘international’ or want to have a go at a local sport, you can have an ‘all-white croquet attire’ for a match on the lawn or better yet and my personal favorite an ‘all-white fireworks display shooting into the clear sky the evening of your wedding (so you don’t have to wait until our 4th of July to have your marriage start off with fireworks!). No matter the size, style or desire of your wedding, The Somerset offers all ‘white-glove service’ that is second to none and considered one of the leading choices for destination weddings.

There are seven ceremony and reception locations on the property and at select locations can accommodate up to 200 of your closest friends/family. There are several things I like about this property but some of my favorites include the restaurants – the food is amazing, the pools (two of them are freshwater) and there are tennis courts and an 18-hole championship golf course (I didn’t butcher it up too much with my swing). Some of the other things that were great about the suites, the ability to have groceries in my refrigerator and aBBQ was just outside, as well as a washer/dryer so I could wash my clothes before I left and come home with clean things. That was a very cool bonus. This was truly like having your own mini-apartment with all the benefits of a hotel.

The Somerset wedding packages start $2,800 to $3,100 and includes having a personal wedding coordinator, the Officiant, processing of all your documentation and License, the ceremony, a soloist and in-suite massages. There are additional prices for various menu options depending on what you wish. They have amazing appetizers, selections and the presentations are some of the most creative I’ve seen. Let me be clear there is an additional prices for fireworks, tenting and photography so please check out all of these before you make your final decision. No mater what the final cost, I believe it will be much less expensive than for the same quality here in NY.

This is what you need to have if you plan on getting married on the island. All ORIGINAL documents must be presented to the Turks and Caicos Registrar of Marriages by the person completing the forms. Original documents to be presented in person are:

1. Passport
2. Original Birth Certificate
3. Proof of marital status - If single a sworn affidavit is required
4. If one of the parties is a divorcee, then a Divorce Decree is required, either the original or a notarized copy, sealed by a Court Clerk
5. In the case of a Widow/Widower a Death Certificate of the previous spouse is required
6. In the case of change of name by Deed Poll or Adoption, then proof is required

What are the busiest times of year you're seeing brides?

We see brides all year round. The most popular months for NYC weddings are April-June and September-November. Even in this economy, we are beginning to receive reservations for 2010 already. Using our floor to ceiling windows make a picture-perfect backdrop no matter if it’s spring flowers, fall foliage or the winter wonderland that becomes Central Park.

What are the best/signature experiences can a wedding party expect - or most importantly, if a couple is looking for a venue, why would they choose Mandarian Oriental, New York hotel vs. another hotel/venue?

We believe that the view, atmosphere, location, service is unparallel. Our biggest selling point is the focus to detail from the tasting to the timeline of the event. We can work with or without your planner – it’s totally the brides’ choice. Should you have a wedding planner, we will work out every detail with her so that nothing is left to chance, but it’s not necessary to have a planner. We also have an extensive list of florists, photographers and musicians that you can choose from should you need help in that area of your planning. On occasion it’s the little touches such as chairs, or our selection of linens and chinaware, which are the finishing touches that take an event from nice to spectacular.

Tell me about the catering, bridal suite and anything else you want to share with a bride.

We have an extensive catering list so the option of food choices and type of service (seated or passed) is up to the couple. The day after, we hope that you will enjoy breakfast with us and perhaps use the spa services to enjoy the complete wedding experience that we offer.

As someone who has seen a lot of venues I can say that the view for me was one of the selling points. There isn’t any other like in NY. I’m always thinking of ways to capture the ‘once in a lifetime’ moment, looking for venues that will leave you breathless. The thing is, at the Mandarin Oriental there were so many moments that will take your breath away, I would suggest you get a great photographer to help you capture them all.

Eco-Fab honeymoon is a great option.

For your honeymoon – timing is absolutely everything. Did you know that ‘timing your vacation’ to be on the slightly off (called shoulder) weeks can save you money?? It seems that 'shoulder weeks' are considered the few weeks right before and after peak season for your particular destination. Ask your travel agent, or call your desired location directly and ask them what are their ‘non-peak seasons.’ This can save you up to 50%.

What to fly, what is the price, where is my seat – oh my! When you booked your reservations in the past, Saturday night stays saved money. Now that’s not necessarily true. Use some of the search engines like kayak.com, cheaptickets.com, lastminute.com, dohop.com, tripadvisor.com, sidestep.com, or farecompare.com to help you find savings on your travel and hotels.

Only the wizard know for sure until now. Have you heard of yapta.com or farecast.com? Both of these sites will send you price drop alerts on your flights and hotels. Farecast.com even has a ‘price prediction’ screen so you can actually plan well into the future for your travel. Of course once you find your flight, use Seatguru.com to pick your seat location (especially good if you or your partner is tall). Hmm, now that I think of it, some airlines are now charging for exit rows, so keep this in mind.

Will that be Cash, Amex, MC or Visa? One of the best and easiest ways is to pay for everything is with your credit cards. I know you may not want to incur more debt, but think of the ‘points’. You can earn everything from flyer points, to cash back. It’s also a great insurance (see your individual cards for their travel policies). Also make sure that you have airline and hotel rewards cards so you can collect points that way as well. You may not think of it as a big deal, but points add up and that could be a free mini-trip for you both.

You want a honeymoon destination that gives back? I Do Foundation is a site that does give back. If you book your honeymoon using their site, they will ensure that a portion of your total price will be donated directly to the charity of your choice.

Let’s get your hands dirty on your honeymoon? I do know a few couples that just might like this. Why not consider a volunteer organization like Cross Cultural Solutions where you are actually working with people who can immediately benefit from your time in their country. Build a house, school or dig a well. If climate change, or the coral reefs is more your passion, then earthwatch.org, is the organization for you. Hey don’t forget we have lots of national parks right here in the US – in NY we have the Central Park Conservancy and I know they can always use a hand (if you want to stay closer to home).

Gansevoort South for a wedding that's hot in South Beach

Recently I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in gorgeous Miami, Florida. In checking out all that has changed down there in the past few years, I wandered into Gansevoort South. With its 110-ft rooftop pool, soaring art deco lobby complete with a 50-ft shark tank, an array of shops, restaurants, and massive David Barton Gym, I had to check out what all the buzz was about. What I found was really three hotels in one: Gansevoort South is a boutique South Beach hotel with a great location and great design; it is also a luxury hotel with guestrooms, pools, and the beach club of a much larger resort; and it’s an event hotel with an array of venues to accommodate weddings, meetings, and parties of all sorts poolside, beachfront, rooftop, or in one of its many indoor spaces.

Want to escape NY for the weekend; not only is South Beach an easy 2 1⁄2 hour direct flight away, but this hotel is a great option. This luxurious property now stands on previous site of the famed Roney Plaza and brings the pulse of New York to the heart of South Beach. I wanted to share some information to you my NY couples that are thinking of having a Florida destination wedding, especially Miami.

Christian Sarquis, Gansevoort South’s Associate Director of Catering, recently spent a few moments with me and we discussed this amazingly space.

Can you tell me about the hotel?

The 334-room Gansevoort South hotel is located on the up-and-coming north end of Collins Avenue (between 23rd and 24th Streets), widely considered to be the next epicenter of South Beach.

The building, originally constructed in the 1960’s in the classic Art Deco style of South Beach, was entirely redesigned around a tri-level private beach club that will anchor the development and serve as its centerpiece and central gathering spot. The Nikki Beach inspired décor will be clean and crisp, utilizing a color palette of rich chocolate brown, deep royal blue and pure white. In the evenings, flames from strategically placed fire features will reflect off of the pool.

The signature feature of Gansevoort South is its rooftop pool and bar, which is a tropical haven dotted with coco palm trees and whimsical cabanas. An urban retreat, the 19,000-square-foot space offers uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and downtown Miami.

As you can see, the hotel has a wide variety of weddings venues from the beach club to the oceanfront pool plaza to the rooftop pool to a selection of smaller indoor spaces, their Sony Cierge Penthouse suite, and a large contemporary ballroom and more.

Why a bride would want to have her wedding here?

Although Gansevoort South is a boutique Miami hotel, it has the weddings venues and offerings of a much larger property. At Gansevoort South, the hotel only hosts one wedding a day to ensure its event staff is focused on one, and only one, event.

Can you tell me about the food that is offered?

The hotel’s food & beverage partner, The ONE Group, who provides pool and room service for the hotel also offers full hors d’oeurves and dinner menus specifically geared to wedding receptions for the bride and groom to select from. The executive pastry chef will also craft a one-of-a-kind wedding cake for the happy couple.

The hotel’s restaurant is a new venture by Philippe Chow, longtime chef at the legendary Mr. Chow in New York, and the perfect location for a rehearsal dinner. The glossy black, white and red supper club churns out haute Chinese specialties such as fresh pulled noodles and spinach-infused green prawns.

The hotel accommodates weddings all year round, with the bulk of them occurring between October and May.
